Lightbourne sets his sights on the finals
National coach Kyle Lightbourne made it perfectly clear where he intends to be next January ? at the Digicel Cup finals in Trinidad and Tobago.
And last night his team took another step towards achieving their qualifying objective by sweeping Bahamas clean off the pitch in St. Michael's, Barbados last night before crowd of 2,500 at the National Stadium.
Already assured of at least battling it out in a triangular play-off for the final spot in January's finals, Bermuda can go one better with an outright win against Barbados tomorrow night to gain automatic berth in the finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying tournament.
Barbados defeated St. Vincent 3-0 in last night's late game to go top of the group with six points from two games.
Bermuda are second, three points behind, ahead of St. Vincent on goal difference only.
And with St. Vincent looking favourites to enjoy a comfortable victory in their final match over the already-eliminated Bahamas, Bermuda are likely to need nothing short of victory over Barbados to finish in the top two.
"We did what we had to do tonight, and that was win the game at all costs. We gave ourselves a chance tonight," a beaming Lightbourne told reporters during the post-match press conference.
"There was a lot of pressure on our football team going into tonight's match as we knew we had to win to stay alive in this competition. So I was very pleased with the way we played tonight. We obviously put them under a lot of pressure and kept the ball behind them." Above all, though, Lightbourne was pleased to see his strikers finally deliver the goods up front.
"Tonight we took our chances and that was pleasing. But our guys also defended well tonight and kept a clean sheet. Timmy Figureido, our goalkeeper, wasn't really tested tonight," the former Coventry City striker added.
"We want to get that second spot, that's what we're fighting for. Our main goal is to get to Trinidad. We have another big game coming up on Thursday (against Barbados) and so we must now prepare ourselves for the next challenge."
Two-goal hero Khano Smith also breathed a huge sigh of relief after all was said and done.
"I'm happy we achieved our objective tonight and won the match to put ourselves in position to obtain our ultimate goal of coming first or second," the New England Revolution striker told reporters.
Asked about his thoughts of not getting a hat-trick, Smith replied: "It makes no difference to me. I just did whatever I had to do to help the team win.
"I'm just happy that we won. We pretty much achieved our objective in the first half, and then just cruised through the second."
