Lionel?s game lifted by ICC incentive

He is the ?Cann do? man of cricket at the moment ? and he is hoping to take that form into the ICC Trophy.

Blazing his way to 128 not out and then seizing three quick wickets in ten overs which cost just 27 runs, Lionel Cann spearheaded Southampton Rangers? 133-run victory over his former club St. David?s yesterday and nobody was more pleased than the all-rounder himself.

Following his obvious crowning as Man-of-the-Match in the Belco Cup final, the star player noted his team were reaping the rewards of his diligent preparation for the crucial ICC Trophy in Ireland in July where Bermuda will be among 12 teams vying for a 2007 Cricket World Cup berth.

?I?ve revamped my whole game. I?ve put in a lot of time. It?s just a matter of staying at the wicket and seeing the pace of the ball and how it?s coming on because I know I can hit the ball.

?When I get to Ireland I want to be fully prepared to perform,? declared Cann whose 73-ball hurricane hundred was the mainstay of a mammoth 311 for six by the triumphant Rangers.

Reflecting on his return to his former home ground Lord?s, the 31-year-old noted ?it was one of those days?.

?The wind was blowing so when I started picking up the ball I didn?t have to hit it too hard. It just flew off the bat.?

Regarding his three-wicket haul which helped limit the hosts to 178 for eight in reply, he modestly said ?the ball was swinging a bit on this grassy strip? and that his intimate knowledge of the St. David?s track proved invaluable.

Winning skipper Janeiro Tucker heaped praise on the newcomer to Southampton?s fold.

?Lionel has been a good pick-up for us and that?s great for the national squad. He has changed his game a lot and is improving. He wants to get in there and bat and play some good cricket which he is doing right now.?

Cann?s right-arm medium pace is a bonus, added Tucker, who hopes the player continues his sparkling showing throughout the season and during the all-important Ireland tournament.

The captain, who shared a vital fourth-wicket stand of 142 with Cann, hailed his team?s score as the reason for their second success in the competition in three years.

?That was a good start for my team ? 300 runs batting first. I thought we did extremely well to get that and set St. David?s back from the start.

?Lionel and I really put our heads down and batted. As national-squad players, we have to be above everybody else and we were talking a lot about how to build the partnership. We just gathered momentum and took it from there,? said Tucker who struck 72.

Stating that his own game is ?coming along?, the Rangers leader also complimented Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock for a fine spell of ten overs for 17 runs (four maidens) which pegged back St. David?s.

Disappointed yet gracious in defeat, losing skipper Clay Smith applauded his rivals? clinical demolition job.

?It was one of those days when we were totally outplayed. Rangers just batted us out of the game from the start and I take my hat off to them. They definitely deserved this.?

Alluding to the fact that St. David?s amassed a huge 352 for four in Saturday?s semi-final against St. George?s, he acknowledged Southampton were a much different prospect.

?Rangers are a lot more experienced than the St. George?s crew. Their bowling has a lot more variety. It was all about the start. We had to get off to a good start.

?If you look at it we were right in the game up to 40 overs when they only had 160-odd. Basically they scored 140 off the last ten overs and that?s where we lost it.

?Lionel Cann and Janeiro Tucker were just phenomenal. There?s no other word for it. They were phenomenal in the way they went about dispatching the ball today.?

After his team found themselves reeling on seven for 108, Smith explained his thinking and tactics changed radically.

?Once we lost Dean Minors who was our last really recognised batsman it was just a matter of playing for pride and getting a respectable total.

?We play this side in another two weeks for the league title so it was a matter of having a look at their bowlers ? what they can and can?t do ? and for my batsmen to get some batting practice. Up until today we hadn?t really gone past the first five in our batting order,? said Smith, posting an unbeaten 70 in his first knock of the season.
