Logie: Umpires gave Holland an edge

Bermuda coach Gus Logie believes Holland may have been given an unfair advantage by the two South African umpires on yesterday?s rain-hit opening day of the Intercontinental Cup clash, writes Adrian Robson.

Logie complained to the two officials, Zama Ndamane and Karl Hunter, that they were too anxious to resume play after rain, in his opinion, had rendered conditions too difficult for his bowlers.

?The conditions were very difficult,? said Logie. ?After lunch, particularly, these weren?t ideal conditions for bowling on a wet outfield. Bowlers were finding it very difficult to grip the ball.

?I really felt the umpires could have waited longer until the outfield dried a bit more. This isn?t a one-day game, it?s a four-day game and conditions are going to change.

?The advantage was with Holland to bat under those conditions and I think that?s a bit unfair. But in saying that, the guys stuck to their task, it?s a pretty flat track, you?ve just got to keep fighting.

?I spoke to the umpires about it, and I think they were certainly influenced by the opposition.

?They?re keen to play, obviously in any conditions, because they see themselves possibly qualifying. But it was unfair. As you saw, they had to change the balls every five or six overs.

?The guys hung in there ? 235 for three on a perfectly good batting strip is not too bad.

?All in all, I?m fairly happy. It?s a pity we couldn?t field our best team because of injuries, but that?s the way it is.?

Logie made the decision to leave out all-rounder Lionel Cann, even though the St. George?s Cup Match skipper felt he had fully recovered from a leg injury he received during net practice last week.

?Lionel wants to play all the time,? said Logie. ?You have a game starting at 10 o?clock and a guy comes in at a quarter to 10, without any practice for the last three days, and says he wants to play.

?I can?t understand why he wants to play. We?re further than that in our development and if that?s the attitude, then I?m sorry.?

Irving Romaine also joined the casualty list yesterday, leaving the ground with an ice pack on his knee after suffering a knock while fielding.
