Manders hailed after gritty win

Bermuda?s Gavin Manders fought off a serious bout with cramps to edge Tomoaki Yasuda of Embry-Riddle College in three sets and lift his Florida Gulf Coast University men?s tennis team to a 5-4 win on Tuesday this week.

?That?s why I recruited the kid,? said FGCU men?s coach J. Webb Horton afterwards.

?It?s not always about skill, it?s about will. He brought his will and his skill today.?

Richard Stempnowski and Jose Pastrello beat the NAIA?s top-ranked doubles team of Costin Corneanu and Nicolas Bousquet as FGCU improved to 2-0.

Freshman Manders has so far won both of his singles matches for FGCU and is 1-1 in doubles.
