Mansell and Vallis in final

Robert Vallis, pictured, takes on Nick Mansell in the final of the Bermuda Amateur Matchplay Championships.

Robert Vallis takes on Nick Mansell in the final of the Bermuda Amateur Matchplay Championships at Mid Ocean Club today.

The pair successfully negotiated their way past Gary Carr and Blake Marshall respectively during yesterday's semi-finals.

Vallis, who won four and three, said he had been able to capitalise on some slack play by Carr.

"Gary made a few early errors which gave me a few holes," he said. "He struggled a bit I think coming back into the wind."

Vallis said his round was a mixed bag.

"I played some good holes and I had one or two sloppy ones. But on the whole I played reasonably well," he said.

Mansell, who saw off Marshall three and two, he was feeling relatively good about his game.

"There are a few bits and pieces that I am having trouble with but I'm hoping it will hold out," he said.

As well as their rivals Mansell and Vallis also had to overcome yesterday's inclement weather.

"Normally I haven't played very well in windy and wet conditions," Mansell said. "This tournament, for some reason, I seem to be handling it quite well. As long as the ball is not moving on the green I don't mind the conditions."

Vallis said he was looking forward to today's 36-hole match-up.

"We have never played before. I know he has been a very good player in recent years, so hopefully it will be a good match," said the three-time winner of the event.

In the Ladies Championship flight final, also today, Jennifer Spurling takes on Dolly Winwick.

In consolation play yesterday Howard DeSilva defeated Ian Page seven and six and Douglas Morris defeated Graham Strange one-up.

In the Ladies Championship Consolation Shirley Wilde saw off Gail Kozol three and two and in the number one flight Susan Vallis beat Mee Lin Barbey.
