Mansell blows away his rival
Medallist Nick Mansell made short work of his opening championship flight contest in the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships when he breezed past British visitor James Gibbs five and three at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
With conditions much better than a day earlier when players battled wind and rain, former champion Robert Vallis also advanced to the second round as he got past Allan DeSilva seven and six.
Promising youngster Jarryd Dillas dismissed American Phil Fulghum five and four, Gary Carr earned a two and one victory over Ian Page while last year's beaten finalist Bill Jenks, from Boston, eased past veteran Howard DeSilva four and two.
Blake Marshall squeezed past Clive Hook one-up and Zane DeSilva, one of only four players to break 80 in Tuesday's medal round, beat avid Thompson five and three.
In the opening round of the women's championship flight, favourite and former winner Jennifer Spurling defeated Gail Kozol and was joined in the quarter-finals by Stephanie Lewis, Dolly Winwick and Susie Elton.
