Marathon man Cal goes the distance
Bermuda?s own ?Mr. Marathon?, Cal Steede, is continuing to live up to his reputation as the Island?s most resilient road runner.
Steede, who regularly runs three races over the January International Race Weekend and is a prominent figure in all of Bermuda?s major events, has just completed his third full marathon (26.2 miles) in less than two months.
On October 9 he completed the Chicago Marathon in a more than respectable three hours and 14 minutes, three weeks later on October 30 he ran the Washington Marine Corps Marathon in three hours 27 minutes and on Thursday ? Thanksgiving Day ? he finished the Atlanta Marathon in 3:32.
Meanwhile, his fellow Swan?s Running Club member Vernon Tankard competed in an 8K race in Philadelphia last weekend, clocking 29 minutes and 56 seconds that placed him sixth in his age group and 81st overall in a field of 1,588 runners.
Local runners and walkers have until next Wednesday to get their entries in for January?s Race Weekend. Beyond that date race fees for the International 10K, Half-Marathon and full Marathon will increase substantially.
The 2006 edition of the annual festival is scheduled for the weekend of January 13 to 15 with the Front Street Mile taking place, as usual, on the Friday evening followed by the 10K on the Saturday morning as well as the 10K Charity Walk, and the Half-Marathon and Marathon on Sunday morning.
In October entry forms were sent out to some 700 local runners and walkers on the BTFA mailing list and to all the local athletic clubs and sport stores. The entry form can also be downloaded on the BTFA website www.bermudatracknfield.com.
Forms can be left in the BTFA box at the Sportseller or mailed to the BTFA.
Entry fees up until next Wednesday are $30 for the 10K and Half Marathon, $20 for the 10K Charity Walk and $40 for the Marathon.
Late entry fee for the 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon is $60 and $30 for the Charity Walk.
Last year the event attracted 520 overseas entrants and 683 locals.
Tomorrow sees the annual BTFA Half-Marathon, starting from the RAA Club in St. George?s at 9 a.m. and winding its way via North Shore into Hamilton to the finish line at Bulls Head parking lot.
