Marshall reign ends as Trott wins thriller
A nailbiting finish saw Hav Trott end the four-year winning streak of Blake Marshall in the annual Men?s Invitation tournament at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
Bidding for his fifth straight title and sixth overall, Marshall was pipped at the second extra hole after the two Bermuda players had finished all square after the regulation 18.
Trott had got off to a fast start, going three up after five holes when Marshall bogeyed one and two and then hit into the water at the par-four fifth.
And he was still three up with only three holes to play before the defending champion launched a stirring comeback, highlighted by a birdie two at the tough par three 17th.
However, Trott ultimately wrested the title at the 20th hole when he sunk a four-foot birdie putt on the par-five second after Marshall had already lipped out his birdie effort from just above the hole.
Meanwhile, in the Senior Division final, Art Bemis dominated proceedings with Ray Daue from the outset by recording three birdies in his first five holes to take a commanding lead which he would never relinquish.
Bemis? birdie blitz, coupled with Daue?s somewhat lethargic start, meant Bemis was five up at the turn, and although Daue tried to claw his way back into the match he eventually ran out of holes and lost by a margin of five and four.
