Match abandoned after fight forces Social Club coach to call players off the pitch

A fight involving several fans and a player on the sidelines resulted in Sunday?s heated First Division clash at Lords between St.David?s and Social Club to be abandoned after 75 minutes.

The second-half incident occurred when an argument escalated into a brawl involving five individuals and a Social Club player near the Bluebirds bench shortly after the player had been substituted.

It is understood the fight carried on for at least ten minutes before opposing coaching staff and a few fans finally intervened and restored calm.

Fearing a further outbreak of violence, Social Club coach Troy Lewis took matters into his own hands and called the remainder of his squad off the pitch ? but not before his team had suffered the indignity of having two players sent off.

It remained unclear yesterday whether or not St.David?s 4-0 win would be allowed to stand as Bermuda Football Association (BFA) will now have to meet over the matter to decide what course of action to take.

?There were only ten minutes left to play, we had already had two players sent off and I just didn?t want anything else to happen,? explained Lewis yesterday.

?It just didn?t make any sense why the fighting went on and on. It happened behind the bench involving one of my players who had been substituted and had changed his clothes,? added Lewis, who defended his decision to call his players off the pitch.

?The fight went on for at least ten minutes and only after the fight had ended I thought it best not for us to play on because there had been a lot of arguing going by both teams over the way the referee (Anthony Francis) was handling the match and everyone was heated.

?But I really don?t know how the fight started but I certainly didn?t want to see any further trouble. We had already lost the match and there were only ten minutes or so remaining and so I thought it best to leave it that before matters really got out of hand.?

Sunday?s incident involving Social Club was the first since the former powerhouse rejoined the BFA ranks at the beginning of the season.

In 2003 Bluebirds dropped out of the First Division, citing difficulties fielding teams and a ?negative? element which had previously plagued the Angle Street club.

Social Club are currently seventh in the First Division standings with three wins to their credit.
