Medal haul swells as swim team continue to shine
Medals and records continued to come Bermuda?s way on Monday night at the Caribbean Swimming Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, with the Island?s female competitors grabbing the spotlight.
Anastasia Lau won silver in the girls? 15-17 age group with a lightning fast time of 34.56 seconds in the 50 metres breaststroke ? 0.70 seconds faster than her heat time and a new Bermuda national and age group record.
Olympics-bound Kiera Aitken, already with two gold medals under her belt, grabbed a silver with an excellent swim in the women?s 200 metres backstroke, clocking 2:24.59, which set a new Bermuda national record.
Rounding out the medals was Rebecca Sharpe with a bronze in the girls? 11-12 200 metres backstroke, lowering her own age group record to 2:42.07.
Aitken and Sharpe have set an unprecedented standard in their respective age groups, medalling in all three backstroke distances and at the same time setting national or regional and age group records in those events.
Bermuda?s male swimmers were less successful on Monday night, despite performing well.
Michael O?Connor finished fifth in the men?s 400 metres freestyle with a time of 4:26.76 while Jason Mastalir took four seconds off his heat time in the same event to finish seventh in the boys? 11-12 age group in 4:55.17.
In the other 50 metres breaststroke events, Graham Smith finished sixth among the men while Ashley Aitken managed eighth in the women?s event. At the 11 and 12 age group level, Chris Garcelon set a new age group record of 36.39 to take seventh place while Catriona Brewin also placed seventh.
In the 200 metres backstroke, Michael O?Connor placed fifth and Nick Thomson and Jason Mastalir sixth and seventh respectively.
In the relays, the men?s 4x100 medley team finished fourth and the boys? 15-17 medley quartet placed sixth.
At the end of Monday night?s event, Bermuda still held a firm grip on sixth place in the overall standings.
Meanwhile, yesterday morning on the final day of the event, Garcelon qualified for two evening finals.
He placed fourth in the 50 metres freestyle and sixth in the 100 metres breaststroke, lowering his own age group record to 1:20.84 in the process.
Lau went into last night?s 100 metres breaststroke final as the second seed following a superb morning heat time of 1:18.51. Also advancing to the final in the 100 metres breaststroke were Catriona Brewin who finished third in her heat and Scott Simmons who placed seventh.
In the 200 metres individual medley, Graham Smith powered home in first in his heat to earn a spot in the final in a time of 2:15.18, which established a new meet record. But he still had to lower that time last night by some margin in order to qualify for the Olympics.
He was joined in the final by Michael O?Connor, who finished fourth. Ashley Aitken took eighth to also make it to the final.
