Ming gets the all-clear

Somerset Trojans diminutive forward Damon Ming has finally received the green light to play football in the UK from British immigration officials.

The 25-year-old Bermuda international obtained a full British passport ? a requirement by FIFA for all overseas players heralding from countries listed above 70 on the world rankings ? last Friday.

But while Ming continues to impress Barnet FC manager Paul Fairclough in training, the Bees? boss has yet to assess the Bermudian in a full match situation.

As such, Ming could now possibly be loaned to Conference South club, St.Albans, where his performances on the pitch could be closely monitored by Fairclough?s staff as it remains highly unlikely the crafty forward will be immediately thrust into Barnet?s squad.

The East London club currently top the Nationwide Conference standings by three points over nearest rivals and this Saturday?s opponents, Carlisle, and are still celebrating a convincing 5-0 drubbing of Dagenham & Redbridge FC over the weekend.

?Ming continues to impress Paul (Fairclough) in training but obviously Barnet currently lead the league and they probably won?t want to risk putting in someone who they haven?t seen play in a competitive game before,? said former St.Albans midfielder and Bermuda assistant national coach Paul Scope yesterday.

?But Damon has been cleared to play as he now has his passport and the manager at Barnet is currently arranging a match for him to play in ? and it could very well be with another club or it could even possibly be at Barnet.?

Scope, who not for the first time has played an integral role in securing football trials for a local athlete, previously played alongside close friend Fairclough at St.Albans for three full seasons.

Should Ming sign on the dotted line, then he will become the first Trojans players since Clyde Best and Randy Horton to aspire to the pro ranks and first Trojan to do so in the new millennium.

Ming led Somerset in scoring last season and is now on the threshold of realising a life-long dream of playing professional football.

In what perhaps proved to be the 25 year-old player?s best season to date, Ming scored a memorable hat-trick on his World Cup qualifying debut against Montserrat at the National Sports Centre earlier this year after helping Trojans clinch the First Division Shield and promotion back to the Premier Division.

Barnet, founded in 1888 , have been a member of the Nationwide Conference for the past 15 years and are commonly referred to as the Bees.

The club play at Underhill Stadium at Westcombe Drive in northeast London.

Ming has now undergone football trials on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2001 the High Point University graduate attended trials with the Atlanta Silverbacks in the US while earlier this summer he had a brief run-out with English Division Two club Oxford United before arriving at Barnet.
