Ming kicks off new season with Hayes
Damon Ming?s attempt to become the next Shaun Goater begins again today as the Island?s sole representative in English football.
Ming, who had a brief trial with Goater?s last club Southend, signed this week for Hayes United, who play in the Conference South ? two promotions away from the pro leagues.
And their season begins today against Histon United at the Church Road ground, which has a capacity of 6,500.
Ming, who also had trials with Oxford United and Barnet before signing for Maidenhead United and then Aylesbury United, is the only Bermudian currently playing in England, while John Barry Nusum and Khano Smith continue to try their luck in the United States.
Ming, a tricky, skilful winger who made his name at Somerset Trojans and is a regular in the national team, was one of four new signings for the English side and made his mark during a series of pre-season friendlies.
He has played some part in the last three games, including starting in a surprise friendly victory over Premiership newcomers Watford.
Big names to have played for Hayes over the years include Jimmy Bloomfield, who was at West Ham four years before Clyde Best arrived, Cyrille Regis, a great friend of Goater?s, and Les Ferdinand, a team-mate of Goater?s at Reading.
Meanwhile stateside, Smith got his first appearance of the season in New England Revolution?s 0-0 draw with the Kansas City Wizards at the Gillette Stadium this week.
Smith, who has been out since the penultimate game of last season with a knee injury, has been struggling through rehab all year, missing the pre-season tour to Bermuda and the first half of the season.
He came on for Joe Franchino in the 78th minute of Wednesday?s game and is expected to be in the squad again for next Sunday?s clash with the Chicago Fire.
