Ming set for Barnet debut

Damon Ming has officially registered with English Nationwide Conference leaders Barnet FC and could be given his first run-out late next week.

Bermuda national squad assistant coach,Paul Scope, currently in the UK, told yesterday that the diminutive Somerset Trojans forward had now met all the criteria to play overseas and was continuing to impress the club?s coaching staff in training.

Scope said Ming was expected to be included in manager Paul Fairclough?s squad of 16 players for two important fixtures next week, though he has yet to sign any long-term deal with the club.

That, said Scope, could all hinge on how well the Bermudian copes on the pitch when he receives the chance to showcase his talents.

?I watched Damon in training yesterday (Sunday) and he looked good,? said Scope. ?He looks very strong and he?s definitely on Barnet?s books.?

However, Scope was quick to point out that Ming would have to hit the ground running as Barnet are currently riding high and boast a quality squad. Only recently manager Fairclough declined to extend the contract of Jamaican midfielder Craig Dobson.

?If he (Ming) can do well in those two games then he could have his contract extended,? Scope added. ?But if he doesn?t impress the boss then he could possibly be loaned to another club outside of the Conference. Damon has happily agreed to the terms and has fully registered with the club.?

Barnet opened up a six-point lead at the top of the standings over the weekend courtesy of a 3-1 away win against closest rivals, Carlisle.

The Nationwide Conference leaders have been drawn against league rivals Farnborough in the next round of the English FA Cup on October 30.

Ming is following in the footsteps of Clyde Best and Randy Horton as former Trojans joining the pro ranks.

It is probable the Bermudian could be given his first dose of competitive English football next week Saturday when the Bees take on Bristol City on home turf at Underhill Stadium.

The 25 year-old forward led the Trojans in scoring last season and netted a memorable hat-trick on his World Cup debut for Bermuda against Montserrat at the National Sports Centre earlier this year.

Ming has also undergone trials with the Atlanta Silverbacks in the US and at English Division Two side Oxford United.

The High Point University graduate is the only one of four Bermudians to be registered with an English club after all travelled to the UK for trials over the summer.

Another Trojan, Stephen Astwood, as well as Dandy Town striker Khano Smith and PHC Zebras attacking full back Kevin Richards were also involved in trials with the former two expected to return to Rochdale for an additional run-out in the near future.

Richards, however, is now working full-time with insurance giants ACE of London and has opted to play football on a part time basis.

?I got him (Richards) the interview,? said Scope. ?But he got the job on his own merit and is concentrating on getting his feet under the table there.?
