Missed chances prove costly for Bluebirds
Social Club 0 Paget 1
"You can dominate a game for long periods, however if you fail to convert your chances into goals, then you may lose the match," said Boulevard coach John Rebello after his team's win over Paget on Sunday.
Young Men's Social Club obviously had not read his words of wisdom for try as they might they could not find the back of the net in Shield competition at St. John's Field last night and ended up going down to the only goal of the game.
Paget's hero was Duane Hurdle who scored in the 12th minute with a low right-foot shot and then helped his team hold on for dear life to extend their run in the tournament.
Unfazed, Social club rallied to the call and Marcus Matthews' shot from just outside of the area narrowly curled past the upright. Bluebirds' Eric Dunkley tried his luck from 25 yards but saw his effort go just wide.
With Social Club enjoying the lion's share of it, Alvin Leverock figured it was time to get in on the act with a shot that was pushed around the post for a corner. This was followed by a desperate goalmouth scramble in front of the Paget goal moments before the half.
Social Club continued right were they had left off in the second period, but were also fortunate on several occasions not to have been punished by Trevor Simons, Mandal Outerbridge and Dwayne 'Liquid' Bean, who all posed a threat when countering in attack.
George Smith, Dunkley, Matthews and Derek Ming, who came off the bench to add imagination up front for the Bluebirds, all then tried and failed to erase the deficit allowing the Lions to hold out for the win and advance to the next phase.
Boulevard 4 Ireland Rangers 1
Boulevard Blazers kept alive their hopes of capturing the First Division League and Shield double on Tuesday night at BAA field.
They had to come from behind to see off Ireland Rangers 4-1 in the knockout competition.
Clifton Anderson struck for Rangers in the 10th minute but Boulevard wasted little time in responding to the challenge, erasing Rangers' lead five minutes later through Michael Parsons.
Then Melchisedec Gibbons, the First Division's top marksman, who entered the contest with 15 goals to his credit, resumed his scoring exploits to extend his tally to 17 for the season.
He notched his team's second and third goals midway through the first-half and an own goal from Rangers closed out the proceedings.
