Mixed bag for youngsters during Canadian quest

Bermuda's Tri-Hedz Junior Triathlon club experienced mixed fortunes over the weekend when 16 members competed in the Triathlon Memphre Magog in Quebec, Canada.

A premier event on the Canadian calendar, the race attracted more than a dozen of Quebec's top triathlon clubs and associations in various divisions.

Marc Smith was the leading Bermuda finisher as he placed a strong second overall in the competitive 12-13 age group with 41 entries.

After exiting the swim in second spot, he then produced the second fastest bike split on a hilly 15 kilometre circuit.

Michael Coles, Alex Godfrey, Brendan Doyle and Michael Armstrong competed in the same division, finishing in 15th, 24th, 25th and 30th place respectively. Reid Henderson failed to finish after suffering a twisted ankle on the run.

In the female 12-13 age division, rising star Ashley Fox placed an impressive third out of 32 competitors.

Perhaps the unluckiest competitor was nine-year-old Mark Godfrey who was disqualified after being sent the wrong way on the bicycle course by a race official.

Amy Fox and Caitlyn Conyers produced respectable performances in the girls' 14-15 year-old division to finish 14th and 15th respectively out of 31 competitors.

Matthew Godfrey continued to show his rapid improvement by finishing seventh in the strong 16-19 year old field. With a further three years in that division, he should prove a force in future years.

Due to the language barrier both Dominique Nannette and Geoffrey Smith failed to start with the rest of the 16-19 year-olds and had to incur a six-minute time penalty. However, they both soldiered on and produced strong performances that, and on adjusted time, would have seen Smith finish fourth overall in his division and Nanette ninth.

In the adult sprint races, Jeffery Conyers finished second in the men's 50-54 division with Ian Coles placing fourth. Nigel Godfrey, the president of Tri Hedz, finished eighth in the men's 45-49 division.

Tri Hedz coach Neil de ste Croix placed third in the men's 35-39 division.
