Mocklow-Mansell showdown

Last year?s runner-up Anthony Mocklow will have another bite at the cherry today in the final of the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club when he takes on Port Royal course superintendent Nick Mansell over 36 holes.

Mocklow, who now lives in Surrey, England and forfeited his professional status over two years ago, lost six and five to Dave Allison in last year?s final and will be looking to make amends against Mansell.

Defending champion Allison was eliminated on Thursday by overseas visitor Kevin McDonnell.

In the quarter-finals yesterday morning, Mocklow narrowly overcame Peter Smith on the 19th hole while Mansell booked his place in the semi-finals thanks to a four and two victory over 2003 champion Arthur Jones.

Elsewhere Blake Marshall took on Robert Vallis, who he lost to the in the final three years? ago.

But Marshall had other ideas this time around, claiming a three and two victory against the multi-time Mid Ocean Club champion.

In the last quarter-final, visitor Santo Lafoca beat McDonnell four and three.

In the afternoon?s semi-finals, Mocklow went up against Marshall ? another champion of the host club ? and won reasonably comfortably four and two while Mansell edged past Lafoca one up.

Meanwhile, in the ladies? championship flight, favourite and former champion Laura Robinson coasted into the final thanks to a five and four win over Susan Vallis.

Her opponent in the final today ? which will also be played over two rounds ? is Susie Elton, who made light of Ann Symonds? challenge with a eight and six win.

The ladies? final begins at 11.44 this morning while the men tee it up eight minutes later.

Michael Sims was on the verge of missing the cut last night at the Barton Creek Challenge in Austin,Texas ? his second Canadian Tour tournament.

Beginning the day on four-over par, having shot 76 in the opening round on Thursday at the Fazio Hills course, Sims needed to put together a run of birdies to guarantee a spot in the weekend rounds ? with the projected cut hovering at four over.

But with only one birdie on the front nine along with three damaging bogeys, Sims stood at six over at the 14th.

And with the light rapidly fading in Texas, there was some doubt over whether he would be able to finish his round before the day was out, meaning that he might have to return today to complete the last few holes.

If he fails to qualify for the final two rounds, it will represent the second time in a week that Sims has not made the cut on the Canadian Tour.

Playing in the Barton Creek Classic Pro-Am eight days ago ? the tour?s opening event of the year ? the Island?s best golfer carded a two-round three-over-par score which was some 13 shots off the lead.
