Moment of truth arrives for Devonshire
The moment of truth has finally arrived for Devonshire Recreation Club.
The only question remaining is whether or not they can seize the moment and go onto greater things or simply go on the bubble.
Devonshire square off against champions Western Stars in the Central Counties final today at St. John's Field, while tomorrow sees them head east to Sea Breeze Oval to take on Flatts in a match of equally significant proportions in terms of gaining promotion or even snatching the league championship.
Other matches today see Southampton taking on PHC in a Premier Division KO Cup make up contest at Southampton Oval and Willow Cuts taking on Cleveland at Somerset Cricket Club.
However, all eyes will be focused on the match at St.John's Field where Devonshire will be looking to upset the apple cart and wrest the title from Stars.
Stars' vulnerability has been exposed in recent weeks as three shock losses in the league have left their title hopes hanging in the balance, while it took a monstrous innings from Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock to restore order in the camp after Police had them reeling at 84 for five during the previous round. The gentle giant stroked an unbeaten 105 that propelled his team to a challenging total of 243.
But the defending champions may find their work cut out for them coming up against a Devonshire side blended with a bit of youth and experience.
Devonshire are currently enjoying one of their finest seasons in recent times and do possess the nucleus and the muscle to get the job done. However, the rest is all up to them as at times they've proven to be their own worst enemy.
Turning to tomorrow, humbled league leaders Southampton will be looking to pick up the pieces following last weekend's crushing 24 run loss to St. George's. Southampton travel west to take on Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club fully aware that any further slip-ups could be catastrophic in terms of seizing a second league title in four years.
Elsewhere, Willow Cuts will be looking to avenge an earlier loss to Stars at St.John's Field, while PHC host Cleveland at White Hill Field.
High flying league title contenders St.George's and fast fading St.David's have the day off as the visiting Pequot Indians take centre stage at Lord's.
In First Division action, Flatts and Devonshire collide head on at Sea Breeze Oval in a crunch match that could go a long way toward determining just who gets promoted or wins the championship, while fellow frontrunners Bailey's Bay take on a rejuvenated Warwick side at Southampton Oval.
In other matches, Police meet IFP LegTrappers at Police Field while cellar dwellers Social Club and Somerset Bridge will do battle at Devonshire Rec.
