More lessons to be learned - again
Bermuda?s heavy defeat against Canada underlined the importance of occupying the crease for periods and taking full advantage of any chances ? according to Bermuda coach Gus Logie.
While Logie applauded his team for posting impressive numbers in both innings, he still felt his batsmen could have hung around the crease a little longer.
?We have been talking about trying to play for the whole day and win as many sessions as possible. We talked about trying to win most games from staying in front,? Logie said.
?We were in front for most of the last day?s play, but it was always going to be difficult trying to wipe off 254 runs.
?Then things changed a bit for us when Canada took the new ball and overall we saw many of our batsmen get good starts but failed to go on to make a hundred.
?I think that was the big difference between us and Canada who had three players score centuries.?
Still, Logie reckons Bermuda would have learned valuable lessons from the experience.
?At the end of the day there were lessons to be learned and all in all it was a brave effort on behalf of the players to bat out the day almost,? he added. ?And to get 300 runs in both innings and lose the game outright is a little difficult.
?But this was another learning process and some of the guys will have been proud of themselves for the amount of time they spent out in the middle. However, once they make these good starts they must learn to carry on and make a really big score.?
Logie described a pitch that held up well for four days as ?easy for batting?.
?It flattened out as the day went on and if you put the effort in you would have gotten something out of it,? he noted.
?And all credit to Canada because they bowled the right line and stuck to the task and were rewarded for their efforts.?
As for the resilience of veteran batsman Clay Smith, Logie said: ?That?s one of the things about Clay . . .his mental strength. This is not all about skill anymore, it?s about how mentally tough you are and I think Clay showed today how mentally tough he is.
?He showed the rest of the guys what was needed, and that was batting for a time. We needed to be patient at times. But that?s cricket and the players will have learned from that.?
