Morgan makes his mark

Daniel Morgan was the toast of the Bermuda camp following an unbeaten knock of 58 off 75 balls that propelled the Island team to Thursday?s six-wicket victory over Clico Preysal Sports Club.

The Warwick right-hander responded to his critics with a polished innings blended with patience and aggression, helping himself to seven fours along the way.

Morgan came to the crease after Warwick team-mate Stephen Bremar jr (one) had been dismissed cheaply in the third over and immediately began steering his side to victory with some technically sound batting.

The 32-year-old added 34 for the second wicket with Treadwell Gibbons jr (10) and another 65 for the fourth wicket with skipper Irving Romaine (33).

Morgan also cupped two outstanding running catches at long-on to help dismiss Clico opener Andy Jackson (10) and number four bat David Livingstone (0).

Speaking to shortly after scoring a maiden half-century ? the first on tour ? playing for his country, Morgan smiled: ?I think this is just the accumulation of a lot of hard work. This is a big learning curve for everyone out here.?

Morgan, who scored 29 in a nine-wicket loss to Clark Road United the day before, said the game plan all along was to try and bat as long as possible.

?The coach basically wants someone at the top of the order to bat through the innings.

?We do have guys who can hit the ball hard. But it?s very important we have someone at the top of the innings to stay through to the end.?

And rather than blow his own trumpet, Morgan instead gave praise to coach Gus Logie.

?He has taken the training to another level,? Morgan said. ?And qualifying for the World Cup has actually brought in the finances to facilitate tours such as these that are very crucial towards our development.?

As for the ongoing tour of Logie?s homeland, Morgan added: ?The guys are working hard, putting in the effort and receiving good coaching and support.?

Meanwhile, Bermuda go in search of win number two today at Gilbert Park where they will meet another top local team, Wanderers, on a wicket expected to favour the slower bowlers.

Wicketkeeper Jekon Edness, yet to play, could be given a chance in today?s match, while fast bowlers Mackie Crane (hamstring) and Stefan Kelly (finger) aren?t expected to take part. Kelly is due to depart Trinidad on Monday.

Bermuda batsman David Hemp?s comeback from injury has yet again been scotched by spring rain in the UK.

The lefthander had the second groin operation of his career during the winter but was named in Glamorgan?s starting XI to play Northamptonshire in a pre-season friendly yesterday.

Heavy rain showers across the country also forced the cancellation of the county?s first warm-up game against Worcestershire at Sopia Gardens, Cardiff on Tuesday.

The 35-year old will spend the entire summer with the county before joining up with national team for their Intercontinental Cup assignments in southern Africa this coming November ? only four months before the World Cup starts.
