Mussenden accused of conflict of interest

With Bermuda Football Association having not submitted financial statements since 2001, Shadow Sports Minister Jon Brunson feels Attorney General and BFA president Larry Mussenden?s dual roles are untenable.

?There is a clear conflict of interest and Mr. Mussenden should do the right thing and resign from the BFA,? said Brunson.

?As Attorney General he is committed to protecting the public interest and dealing with legislation, yet the organisation of which he is president is failing to fulfil the statues of the Charities Act by not submitting their accounts.

?It is an unacceptable situation and as clear as conflict as you can get. He is charged with ensuring statutes are fulfilled yet his organisation is breaching one.

?And it would also be in the best interests of football on the Island if the president of the association had more time to commit to the role.?

Brunson also questioned how Mussenden could properly ?protect the public interest? ? in this instance the taxpayers? dollars ? when he had a personal interest in to whom the money was delegated.

Mussenden, appointed to the Attorney General position earlier this year, has come under fire in recent weeks following some high-profile controversy with the BFA over funding, training facilities for the youth squads and the hotel bungle that nearly cost Bermuda the right to host the second leg of their World Cup qualifier against El Salvador.

Earlier this week, when revealed that Kenny Thompson?s position as national coach was in jeopardy, Mussenden was also serving as Acting Transport Minister and having to deal with the taxi strike.

He was unavailable for comment last night.
