New rowing club determined to make a splash
The new Bermuda Rowing Association (BRA) is aiming to establish the sport as ?a serious choice? for Bermudian athletes.
Incorporated in March, the organisation already has 45 members and is hoping to increase interest through junior programmes, the development of recreational and competitive rowing and, generally, spreading news about the sport?s benefits.
At their recent Open Day, BRA president Michael Swain told the gathering that he and several other members were prepared to dedicate time to coaching.
However, the club only has one boat at present and is seeking assistance in purchasing more equipment.
Once that?s done, he noted that rowing was a very low-cost activity in which almost everyone could participate. Swain expressed satisfaction in the numbers of people already showing interest in rowing, saying this augured well for the association?s growth.
?Rowers are some of the fittest athletes you will find. Of more benefit though are the essential team spirit, self-discipline and confidence that the sport instils.
?A healthy lifestyle and outlook is important but we do know how to relax also. It is a very social sport,? noted Rowing Officer Lawrence Bird.
The highlight of the BRA?s Open Day was the naming and launching of their new double-sculling boat .
The naming ceremony was performed by Katherine Horvath, the wife of club vice-president Ernest Horvath. The latter, along with Bob Cooney, donated the vessel.
About 20 of those in attendance were invited to try out while others rowed in some privately-owned single sculls.
There was also a rowing demonstration by former Swiss champion, Olivier Horvath, who was visiting the Island while Bror Muller ? himself a three-time New Zealand champion ? provided informative commentary.
