New signings a boost for ambitious Blazers
Boulevard Blazers manager Amon Brown will kick off the new season in confident mood - buoyed by the recent signings of former PHC skipper Stanton Lewis and former Somerset Trojan Torry Davis.
“They are certainly two great pick-ups,” said Brown yesterday.
“They have already played at the senior national level so that will add a bit more experience and ability to our team.”
Others who Brown expects to shoulder the load this season are Conneko Trott, Melchisedic Gibbons, Raymond Burgess and captain Shakai Crockwell.
Coach John Rebello, meanwhile, will remain at the helm.
“Last season was a wonderful season for us,” continued Brown. “Everyone had us written off . . . to go back down. But not only did we survive, if we could've beaten North Village or even drawn against them leading into the final weeks of the season, then the league championship may have been even closer.”
Now, the former Blazers utility player says his team are looking to take their game to the next level.
“We most definitely are looking to build on that,” he added. “And with the inclusion of Torry and Stanton, guys are looking for some silverware.”
Boulevard barely missed out last season when they were ousted in the Friendship Trophy semi-final by Somerset Eagles.
Still, Brown is confident of success this season. And he warned his rivals “not to take the Blazers too lightly.”
“No team had better play us short this season,” he declared. “It would be very unwise for anyone to try and take us for granted.”
As for Sunday's season opener against Dandy Town, Brown refused to make any predictions. He did, however, say: “Whoever wants it the most will win.
“We already know that every team will be coming after us this season because of our proven track record. Remember Boulevard swept everything during the 1990s. Therefore, we are still considered a championship team and so when teams come up against us, they always come prepared.
“Whenever teams come up against us, they know they have to play their best.”
Meanwhile, Leroy Stevens has rejoined the club having originally headed off to play for new team Magnum Force, who announced this week they had withdrawn from the First Division due to a lack of players.
