No place like home for Social Club
As Dorothy once said in the famous film the Wizard of Oz: 'There's no place like home.' First Division team Social Club would be the first to agree, if only they had one.
Heading into the second weekend of the 2003 season, the Angle Street club have yet to find a new venue after being evicted by former landlords Devonshire Recreation Club just prior to the start of the new season.
Social Club were originally scheduled to play Leg Trappers tomorrow at Devonshire Rec. and Devonshire at the same venue on Sunday. The First Division club also had both of their matches scrapped last weekend partly due to no fixed abode and partly down to the fact the pitch at White Hill Field was not ready.
However, Social Club will finally see action this weekend when they take on Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday at Devonshire Rec. Devonshire officials yesterday confirmed that their ground will be up and running in time for Sunday's clash, which thus far, has only been played out in print.
Bermuda Cricket Board officials, meanwhile, are still attempting to resolve the ongoing dilemma.
"The Board are still looking into the matter," was all Bermuda Cricket Board president Reggie Pearman was prepared to say yesterday.
"Hopefully, we will try our best to reschedule the matches so that everybody can be accommodated - and that's it for now."
Pearman did, however, rule out any possibility of having Social Club play out their matches on any of the Island's three concrete batting strips. At present, Naval Field in Somerset, Shelly Bay Field and Garrison Field in St.George's all have concrete strips.
BCB officials also confirmed yesterday that Wellington Oval will not be ready for play until July instead of the previous targeted date in June. St.George's are presently sharing Lord's with neighbours St.David's, while Cleveland have temporarily relocated at St.John's Field.
Meanwhile, Devonshire Recreation Club secretary Ellsworth Christopher hit back yesterday at recent comments made against his club by Social Club sports director Fred (Pinks) Lewis.
Incensed over Lewis' comments blasting Devonshire Rec., Christopher - speaking publicly for the first time over the matter - yesterday went on the counterattack.
The BCB executive said any chance of reconciliation toward Social Club's plight had now gone out of the window in the wake of Lewis' comments.
Devonshire's decision not to grant Social Club access to their grounds led many to perceive their stance as a form of retribution.
Last season Social Club and Willow Cuts were allowed to play a make-up match which Cuts won to pip Devonshire for promotion - despite the fact that no other teams around the leagues were permitted to do the same.
But according to Christopher, this is simply not the case.
"Last week there were some assertions made by Social Club that intended to paint a dim picture of our club and I didn't appreciate that. I thought that it was rather unfair," said Christopher yesterday.
"From when I was young . . . Social Club used to play at Sports Arena or Pembroke Park. As long as I can remember Social Club and Western Stars have always shared a field and it was the same thing up to last year. They've never had Devonshire Rec. as their home field and last year when they ran into a little trouble with Stars one of the members of the (Devonshire) club thought that we might try to accommodate them and have them play games here.
"But they had never officially applied to have Devonshire as their home field. And this year we stated very early the things that we wished to do to our field."
Asked whether outstanding debts had anything to do with his club's decision not to grant Social Club access, Christopher replied: "That was only one of the issues . . . that was minor. The fact is that Social Club have never had their own field.
"They have never established Devonshire Rec. as their home field and last year we only accommodated them temporarily. But it was never a long term agreement."
Social Club also received the boot from Stars last season.
When contacted yesterday, Lewis refused to add any additional comments.
