No such luck for footballers

Despite conceding 12 goals and failing to score even one, women?s national soccer coach Vance Brown still believes there were positives to be taken from his side?s Gold Cup qualifying exit.

Brown, who is stuck in Miami until Friday with his team because of Hurricane Florence?s weekend arrival, remained upbeat even after 7-0 and 5-0 defeats to Jamaica and Haiti respectively.

The team, who were actually eliminated in a previous qualifying round before being given an 11th hour reprieve to play in the next stage in Trinidad, were outplayed and outrun in both matches, with the Jamaica performance particularly disappointing.

?Fitness-wise, the Jamaicans were at another level and they were probably better than us skill-wise as well, but not that much better,?said Brown from his Miami hotel yesterday.

?It wasn?t a very good performance from us and we were all left disappointed afterwards.

?The girls just didn?t seem up for it, I?m not sure it was nerves or what, but it wasn?t a great performance. Jamaica were a good side but they were not seven goals better than us.

?Against Haiti we were much better against a team who were more skilful than the Jamaicans. I think we played much better and if we had that intensity in the first game then we would have had a much better scoreline.?

Brown was disappointed with his team?s fitness levels compared to their opponents, although he was impressed with those players who are on college scholarships who are playing regularly.

?Although the results weren?t what we were hoping for, we were up against two very good teams and we knew it would be tough,? Brown continued.

?I definitely believe our programme is moving forward. We have a dozen players away at college and we gave a couple of our up and coming players a run in this tournament and they did very well.

?We are getting better all the time and I compare the performances against Jamaica and Haiti from 1999 when we set out and now, it is amazing how much better we are.?

The domestic season begins in the next few weeks with the national team not likely to be active until around March when a touring side from the Boston area has expressed an interest in coming to the Island.

In terms of overseas tours, the team have been invited to the Turks and Caicos Islands for a tour in August while they have the Island Games ? where they will look to improve on their bronze medal from Shetland ? in Rhodes in June and there has also been an invitation to play in a competition in Barbados over Easter.
