Nusum getting back into the swing of the indoor life

Indoor star John Barry Nusum feels he still has a lot of improving to do despite scoring on his season debut.

Nusum had five weeks off after a season playing outdoors with the Virginia Beach Mariners and returned to the indoor scene with a strike in last weekend?s 7-6 win over the California Cougars.

And he thinks his season can only better and end on a winning note in the Major Indoor Soccer League.

?I still haven?t quite got my touch back,? said Nusum, who won Rookie of the Year with the Philadelphia KiXX last winter

.?I had five weeks where I basically didn?t kick a ball. I was back in Bermuda and just spent my time relaxing ? I did have a little kick with Wolves but it was nothing serious.

?When I got back to Philly my touch was a bit off. It?s returning to me although there?s still a few of the little things about the indoor game that haven?t come back yet.

?It is just a matter of time and getting back into it and the speed of the game. It was nice to score a goal and get a win but I know I can play better than that.?

As well as remembering the nuances of the shortened format, Nusum has also had to remember the names of his new team-mates this campaign.

Expansion and dispersal drafts in the ever-evolving league have altered the personnel at the KiXX to the extent that although Nusum is desperate for a championship in his second season, he?s not yet sure if it is achievable.

?Yeah, there are a lot of new guys here,? continued the national team favourite.

?We are still getting used to each other a little bit. Talent-wise the new guys are pretty impressive but it is too early to say how we are going to gel.

?The aim this year is nothing less than a championship. After winning the Rookie prize last year the next thing now has to be the overall prize.

?We got to the semi-final last year but we all thought we were worth more.

?We play the defending champs (Millwaukee Wave) this weekend and we are looking to send out a message with a good performance.?

And on a personal note, Nusum is hoping another good season will give him an opportunity to join national team striker Khano Smith at the next level up, Major League Soccer.

?I am always looking for an opportunity,? said Nusum, who was drafted into the MLS from college but never quite made the transition.

?I still would like to play at that level, it is just a case of waiting for an opportunity and then making the most of it.?

Nusum revealed that he is in regular contact with Smith and left him a message after the Revolution?s MLS Cup defeat ? ?I thought then would be a bad time to actually call him, no one likes to chat after a loss like that.

?But we are in touch a lot, just seeing how each other are doing.

?I think Khano can be very proud of what he has done for the Revolution this year.?
