Nusum's double saves Silverbacks
John Barry Nusum's electric start to the new A-League season continued on Friday night when he bagged both Atlanta Silverbacks goals in the 2-2 draw with the Rochester Rhinos.
Nusum, who scored one and helped create another in the opening game with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, almost single-handedly salvaged the game for the Silverbacks who had been 2-0 down after 63 minutes in New York.
In the 79th minute the former Wolves striker latched onto a corner from Eric Ozimek and fired home and then six minutes later he brought the sides level.
Nusum, whose father John played for the New York Cosmos and the Rochester Lancers, replicated the feat from another Ozimek flag kick.
Neither team were able to find the winning goal in overtime.
The goals capped a fine week for Nusum who was selected by for the A-League team of the week after his performance in the first match. In that game Nusum did a great job leading the Silverbacks' forward line against a tough Pittsburgh Riverhounds defence. His performance included a powerful headed goal in the 25th minute.
The Silverbacks are now fourth out of five in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Last night they took on the Richmond Kickers.
Khano Smith bagged a double, the second in injury time, to seal the Carolina Dynamo's 2-1 victory over Wilmington on Saturday.
Smith (22), a striker with the United Soccer Leagues club, only signed for the team at the start of the season.
He almost scored on his debut last week but made sure of the glory this time around.
Coming on as a substitute in the 50th minute, Smith had a simple message from his coach Joe Brown. "He told me to go on and change the game, basically," Smith said from the US.
His first goal was a header from a cross around the 70th minute and the second was a repeat of the chance he missed last week.
In that instance the 'keeper came out to smother his shot as he bore down on goal, but this weekend Smith got it right. "It was weird how similar they were," said Smith. "This time I got a pass on the left, dribbled down beat a defender and scored."
As for his reaction? "It was great, I took my shirt off and jumped into the crowd," he said.
Smith said he was pleased with how his opening games had gone but said he still needed to make progress.
"I think I am playing OK but I think I will improve when I settle down there," he said.
