O'Brien gets final warning

Bermuda's squad for the Stanford 20/20 tournament train on the beach on Antigua during their visit to the island for the tournament's opening ceremony.

George O?Brien Jr. was given yet another final warning over his behaviour by the Bermuda Cricket Board yesterday.

A special meeting of the executive was called a week before the team were due to travel to Antigua for a Stanford 20-20 clash with Jamaica next week to talk to the player about the ?standards expected of a national team cricketer?.

O?Brien, who has undergone anger management courses in the past, was again back in hot water with the authorities after what has been described as ?uncooperative behaviour? while on tour of Antigua last weekend for the opening ceremony of the Stanford tournament.

The fast bowler arrived late for a training session and then refused to attend another held during last week?s brief tour of the Caribbean.

O?Brien was invited to the afternoon meeting and warned as to his future conduct both for his attitude on the tour and also, it is understood, a failure to attend training sessions in Bermuda.

?We had a meeting with members of the executive and George yesterday,? confirmed BCB president Reggie Pearman.

?And it was made clear to him what the standards expected of a member of the national squad are.

?George now has a very clear understanding of what is expected of him and if there were to be any future transgressions they would be dealt with accordingly.?

Arguably the Island?s top fast bowler, O?Brien has often found himself immersed in controversy or faced with disciplinary action during his chequered career.

During last summer?s Cup Match classic at Wellington Oval, O?Brien landed a blow to the face guard of Somerset batsman Stephen Outerbridge who allegedly spat on the fiery fast bowler.

Both players were later slapped with two years probation for their on-field shenanigans.

In 2003, O?Brien was omitted from the Island?s Under 19 youth squad for fighting with Treadwell Gibbons jr during a practice session at the National Sports Centre and has also been dealt with internally at club side St.David?s for various other disciplinary reasons in the past.

However, after publicly apologising for his involvement in the Cup Match flare up, O?Brien appeared to have put his past troubles behind him and opened a new chapter in his career

Earlier this year, O?Brien successfully completed cricket studies in Australia along with Kwame Tucker. He then accompanied the senior national team on tours of Trinidad, England and Guernsey.

?I just want to get on with playing cricket because that it what is most important to me,? O?Brien told prior to heading for cricket studies in Brisbane, Australia last January.
