Onions hang on to book spot in final
MR Onions earned a place in the Commercial Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Dandy Town Roots at Somerset Cricket Club after nearly letting slip a two-goal lead for the second time in a week.
Onions? Colin Keane created the first chance of the game in the first minute but sliced his shot wide. But it was Dandy Town who dominated the early stages and appeared more committed.
The Town strikers were causing problems for the Onions defence who conceded a series of corners and Town will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken the lead.
Instead, after 25 minutes, it was Onions who went ahead against the run of play.
Town only partially cleared a corner and it fell to Onions player-manager Steve Smith just outside of the box from where he hammered an unstoppable left footed shot into the top corner for his first goal of the season.
The strike seemed to inspire Onions who controlled the remainder of the first half and should have scored when substitute Rael Coen broke down the right and squared for John Lally who shot over from six yards out.
Onions stretched their lead on the hour with an excellent goal. Coen and Eoghan O?Dwyer combined well down the right to create space for O?Dwyer who swung in a cross that Keane headed firmly into the back of the net.
After letting a two-goal lead slip against Robin Hood on Saturday, Onions were determined not to let Roots back into the game. But that determination lasted a full four seconds as Roots scored a remarkable goal straight from the kick-off.
After his strike partner kicked off, Town forward Diallo Sharrieff spotted Onions goalkeeper Chris Hewson slightly off his line and launched the ball into the top corner from over 50 yards.
The last half hour was spent with Roots searching desperately for the equaliser but there were no real clear cut chances as the Onions defence held firm, booking a spot in the final at Wellington Oval on March 4.
After the game Onions manager Smith said: ?We?re delighted to have won and looking forward to the final ? most of our team have not played in a cup final since they were at school.
?Dandy Town caused us a lot of problems in the first half and proved they?re a much stronger team than their league position would suggest ? hopefully they won?t get relegated as they play good football in the right spirit and are a welcome addition to the ?A? Division.?
Much to the annoyance of both Valley and BAA the second semi-final was postponed by referee Antoine Augustus as one of the linesmen failed to show up. A replay has yet to be scheduled.
