Onions knock Village out of top spot

MR Onions feared they would struggle in the Commercial League this season but now sit on top of the table after beating North Village 4-2.

That victory on Saturday leaves the pub side ahead of Village on goal difference.

The first half was all Onions with Nick Briggs and Eoghan O?Dwyer putting pressure on the Village defence at every opportunity.

The first goal by Mike Neville was a half volley from the edge of the box into the top corner but the goalscorer then got himself booked for an over-excited shirt-off celebration.

Onions then pounced on defence mix-ups with a tame ball landing at Gary Garnett?s feet for a close range finish. Pressure on the last man and ?keeper from Nick Briggs forced a poor ball into the path of O?Dwyer who netted an easy third.

This seemed to wake North Village up and relax MR?s grip on the game.

A late challenge by Mike Neville five minutes into the second half saw the BHS teacher sent off for his second yellow card.

Onions were on the back foot for the rest of the game with the classy Kenny Thompson netting two for Village while Augusto Arrarte replied for Onions whose squad will be boosted by players returning after dedicating themselves to training for last Sunday?s New York marathon.

Tuff Dogs are also on ten points after a thumping 7-2 victory over PHC Raiders who, lacking front men Mark Wade and Kyle Lightbourne, paid for wasteful finishing.

A hat-trick for Jamal Stovell, and goals from Jeff Franklin and Reid Gaglio, plus an own goal helped Dogs have their day. PHC scored via Keith Bell and a Stephen Trott penalty.

Key West kept up the pressure on the leading pack after an 8-1 hammering of sorry Devonshire Lions.

Earl Richardson, Kwame Tucker and Arnell Thomas all got two each while an own goal and a Roderick Lewis effort completed the rout over Lions who managed a solitary effort from Philip Clarke.

Reigning champions Robin Hood lost their first game of the season against their old arch rivals BAA by a solitary goal five minutes before the interval at Bernard Park.

The game was evenly poised with both sides creating chances until BAA striker Dave Gibbs burst through the centre of the Hood defence to shoot past the advancing Randy Darrell.

BAA should have doubled their lead immediately but for a fine point-blank save from Darrell. They then hung on against a late rally by Robin Hood who are truly in the doldrums with just one win all season.

Somerset Bridge Peskies picked up their first win of the season and moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 triumph over Valley.

In the B Division, the Dandy Town Roots juggernaut rolled on with the league leaders easily overcoming a short-handed Somerset Extros 15-1.

The top four places remain unchanged with Boulevard beating Wolves 6-2 to stay second. St. George?s remained in third after putting six past Dockyard Falcons. In-form Lionel Cann got five and Del Hollis one while Sean Symons and Gary Toy replied for Falcons. And Vasco remained fourth after beating fifth-placed Devonshire All-Stars 2-0 although the game was abandoned after 80 minutes by the stand-in referee after a late tackle sparked a flare-up.

Hamilton Parish moved up after winning three on the trot. This week they overcame Pest Control 5-1 with two goals each from Irvine Burgess and Jade Burgess and one from Johnny Bean. Macaie Bean netted for Pest Control.

Prospect/Fire won inter-service bragging rights over Prison Officers with an 8-3 victory.

Dean Martin and Michael Rawlins both got hat-tricks while Tracey Adams and Dwayne Smith also found the net. Dwayne Richards got all three for Prison Officers.
