Onions, Pot heading for title showdown
The Commercial League ?A? Division has been turned into a two-horse race between MR Onions and Lobster Pot following Key West?s shock defeat against Somerset Bridge Peskies at the weekend.
North Village also blew their title chances by losing to Pot despite taking the lead through a Stephen Coddington strike just before half-time.
Pot hit back twice in the second half via veteran Colin James and Dave Allison.
Their win sets up a grand finale at White Hill Field where Pot take on leaders Onions in the final game of the season ? or at least it should be the last game if the BFA re-arrange Onions? postponed match against Devonshire Rec Lions before then.
Onions were in no mood to let the title slip when they took the lead against Valley in the first five minutes as Greg Fraser volleyed in a Eoghan O?Dwyer corner from close range.
Constant Onions pressure left the defence with little to do except watch as Colin Keane carved out and then wasted numerous chances.
In the second half, Valley opted for height up front and the long ball but the Onions defence, which has conceded just 13 goals all season, continued to win everything in the air.
The poor pitch led to a number of missed chances until Garrett Mulvin was put through down the right side and lobbed the ?keeper from 30 yards.
A good save from Onions ?keeper Chris Hewson in the last five minutes denied Valley but unmarked Valley midfielder Kevin McNeil did get a late consolation effort to make the final score 2-1.
Tuff Dogs put behind them an otherwise quiet season as they hit top form on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over BAA. Jeff Franklin hit a hat-trick and Chris Pett and Jamel Lovell scored the others. BAA netted through player/manager Tommy Gribbin and a Dave Gibbs penalty.
PHC beat Devonshire Lions 2-1, helped by goals from Keith Bell and Sheridan Ming.
Fellow relegation strugglers Somerset Bridge Peskies picked up their second win of the season with a last-minute goal from Joe Moniz against Key West. Moniz was on target twice in the 5-4 win. Team-mate Ruffins Hill also got two while Paul Humphries was on target.
Key West scorers were Casey Butterfield, Craig Brangman, Roderick Lewis and Webster Mills.
Both Devonshire Lions and Peskies have a chance of beating the drop but have a lot of work to do to overtake Valley who are third from bottom.
?B? Division leaders Dandy Town Roots are reeling after losing their first game of the season ? to fellow title challengers St. George?s who are now just a point behind.
St. George?s scored first when a long free kick by Shea Pitcher was chested down by Lionel Cann on the edge of the box and pushed to the onrushing Eugene Crockwell to fire into the top corner.
Roots? Mike Wells replied from the spot after a foul in the box.
Crockwell pounced on a loose ball to edge St. George?s in front only for Mark Trott to reply for Roots when his harmless-looking cross found the back or the net.
But in the second half Crockwell grabbed a hat-trick against the run of play while Lionel Cann sealed it after a spectacular crossfield dribble.
Third-placed Vasco cruised to a 10-2 victory over Wolves. Jason Minors netted four, Michael Bean three, Paul Frias two and John Frias one. Wolves? Shannon Tuzo scored off a deflected shot while team manager Daniel Stovell netted a header.
Pest Control beat Prospect/Fire 8-2 with two goals each from J.Matthews, M.Bean and D.Foley and single strikes from P.Pedro and T.Crockwell. Nigel Richardson and Theron Smith replied for Prospect/Fire.
Short-handed Devonshire Colts put up a brave first half fight before going down 4-0 to Hamilton Parish who scored through Irving Burgess, Philip Burgess, Shannon Warner and Leroy Robinson.
Dockyard Falcons had no trouble against Boulevard at Malabar. Fifteen minutes in Gary Trott buried the ball from a corner, minutes later Dwayne DeRosa latched onto a through ball for the second before Trott again got on the scoresheet.
Boulevard found the Falcons? net late in the half but DeRosa capitalised on another corner for the Falcons after the break before Trott grabbed his hat-trick after taking advantage of a defensive error. Boulevard scored once more but a spectacular penalty save by Falcons? ?keeper, DeVaughn Dill stalled their comeback.
Somerset Extros started with two extra men over Prison Officers but soon found themselves two down before a Matt Taylor strike began the revival to give the side a rare win.
Michael Bremar notched a second for Extros and later got a penalty while Ed Lightbourne also netted from the spot.
Prison Officers? stand-in ?keeper Donald Norford performed heroics but couldn?t keep out a Shawn Wade thunderbolt as Extros made it five before Prison Officers got their third with a long range lob over the stranded ?keeper.
