Optimists remain on course for title
Team Bermuda remain on course for a clean-sweep of honours at the North American Optimist Championships in Valle de Bravo, Mexico.
Having already retained their Team Racing championship earlier this week, Bermuda's young sailing contingent made significant inroads towards retaining the individual championship yesterday.
Local young skipper Sean Bouchard currently leads the 122 strong racing fleet and is closely shadowed by compatriot Elijah Simmons who was simply on fire.
Simmons captured a first and two second place finishes, an outstanding performance which catapulted him from 34th to second place among the points standings.
Equally impressive was Bouchard who managed to maintain his consistency and take sole possession of the top spot after his Brazilian rival, Baepi Lacativa slipped off the pace. Local defending champion Jesse Kirkland also slipped, from a challenging fourth position down to 11th overall.
Argentina's Nicola Zulian, meanwhile, remains in third.
The remainder of the local contingent endured mixed results.
Yesterday saw four races held on a day originally designated as a spare as race officials sought to make up lost ground after several races were abandoned due to lightening storms earlier.
All competitors were allowed to drop a race yesterday with another now scheduled to take place after the next two races.
