Patchett snatches double gold

Bermuda?s women return from St. Lucia today with the best possible medal haul from the Caribbean Cycling Championships ? two golds and two silvers.

Veteran Lynn Patchett swept the board at the annual event, successfully defending her time trial crown and adding the road race title, while Deanna McMullen can be pleased with her runner-up spots in both events behind her team-mate.

Kent Richardson led the five-strong men?s team in the time trial with a seventh place finish while Geri Mewett managed fifth overall in yesterday?s road race.

?I?m very happy with what I achieved this weekend,? said Patchett, who admitted she wasn?t yet sure if she would be defending her titles next year.

?The time trial course had a couple of hills and I like climbing so I was happy and comfortable defending my title there and then we went into the road race and I was very happy with our teamwork, using the time trial to gauge who we needed to mark.

?It was nice to pick up double titles ? we are trying to promote women?s cycling in the Caribbean and thanks to years of good female competitors going down from Bermuda, we are getting quite a reputation nowadays.?

Patchett, who recovered from a broken finger sustained in the recent CD&P Grand Prix here, found the courses very much to her liking, particularly the relatively short road race course.

For the men?s team, who lost top rider Kris Hedges to a broken collar bone after his well-documented leap into the sea from Watford Bridge, it wasn?t quite as successful a trip.

In Saturday?s time trial, Richardson led the Island cause in seventh, with Ricky Sousa Sr. finishing in 11th.

In the road race, Mewett ? the team leader ? finished a creditable fifth, Garth Thompson finished in one of the leading peleton groups but Richardson, Sousa and Jamie Brown all dropped out with mechanical problems.
