Pearman destroys rivals

Dwayne Pearman stormed away from the field to complete a commanding 20-shot victory and successfully defend his title in the Bermuda Professional Golfers' Association championships at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.

Entering the final round with a 13-shot lead over nearest rivals Derek Douglas and Bentley Gibbons, the Ocean View pro pulled further ahead with a two-over-par 73 to clinching an unprecedented tenth championship.

He finished the 72-hole tournament with a total of 300, picking up a winner's cheque of $2,000. The tournament was sponsored by Leon Williams.

Brian Morris (77) and Douglas (80) finished tied for second on 320 while a closing round of four-over 75 saw Chris Smith seize third place overall (321).

Despite recording one of his most lopsided wins, Pearman said he wanted to sharpen his putting before heading off to compete in the Azores Pro-Am next month.

"I hit the ball fairly well. I think that I am swinging OK, but I still have not put it all together yet," he said.

"But I'm happy with the way that I have been hitting the ball - I just couldn't get it in the hole. You have to make birdies to shoot under par and I made too many bogeys and not enough birdies."
