Teresa Perozzi is aiming high.

The Bermudian boxer, who recently moved to Los Angeles, is targeting a world title even though she has yet to turn professional.

Perozzi represented Bermuda at the inaugural women's amateur World Championships in Scranton, Pennsylvania last year and her last fight was a three round triumph at the 2002 East Regional Women's Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina earlier this year.

Since moving to the West Coast, Perozzi has hooked up with one of the female fight game's top trainers.

"I am training with Laila Ali's former trainer Dub Huntley at the LA Boxing Club," she said. "He is an amazingly knowledgeable trainer and we are really connected."

Huntley is a former pro and trained Ali early in her career. The daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali traded on her name to raise her profile but is now an established fighter on the women's circuit.

Though lacking the pedigree of Ali, Perozzi will be hoping Huntley can achieve a similar outcome with her.

"He is very impressed with me and says that I have the potential and drive to be a world champion," she said. "We began sparring this week, which is a new experience for me in a real setting.

"We train in actual rings and there are men and women to train with."

Clearly excited by what she has achieved so far, Perozzi believes "the possibilities are endless" and intends to turn professional in the not-too-distant future.

"There are not too many women at the amateur level in my weight class," said the 27-year-old middleweight. "I am going to try for the Golden Gloves in May and will be turning professional real soon when my fitness level is a bit better."

Nothing would give Perozzi more pleasure than to make her bow in Bermuda and she has already tentatively pencilled a date in in August.

"I will possibly be making my pro debut in Bermuda right around Cup Match as we have been in contact with the promoters of a big event happening around then," said Perozzi, referring to the proposed fight night being planned by Ali's manager and husband Johnny McClain in August.
