Perozzi title shot on hold
Teresa Perozzi?s potential World Boxing Association (WBA) title shot remains in doubt after the fight?s promoter revealed yesterday there had been a delay finding a suitable challenger.
Trinidadian slugger Scroller Carrington, a former adversary of Perozzi, was the favourite to square off for the vacant title against Bermuda?s own North American Boxing Council (NABC) world champion in either late February or early March on local shores.
But Trinidadian promoter Boxu Potts said he had been forced into an awkward position by the six foot one Carrington, who is insisting she wants to fight a warm-up bout in Belgium this month before taking on Perozzi.
?Allowing Scroller to fight in Belgium could make things difficult for me,? said Potts.
?Boxing is an unpredictable sport and if Scroller was to somehow lose that fight in Belgium, however unlikely, it would put the world title fight with Teresa in jeopardy.
?There?s no doubt in my mind that Scroller is the leading candidate, and I am planning to sit down with her tomorrow (today) and see where her head is at and whether we can come to some sort of arrangement. I?d like to get her sign a contract if I can but I?ll have a much clearer idea of where we stand by tomorrow or Friday.
?In the meantime, I?m working on finding a worthy alternative to Scroller should things not go according to plan. There are a number of fine young ladies out there who might be possibilities and from my perspective it makes sense to keep the options open.?
In the last few weeks, Potts has been in contact with the relevant organisations in Bermuda to try and ?get the ball rolling? ? though he is concerned about his event?s likely proximity to the Police Club Fight Night, scheduled for March 10.
He added, however, that he would be working ?day and night? to make the prestigious title clash a reality.
?There is certainly an issue there (with Police?s Fight Night) and I wouldn?t want there to be a conflict,? he said.
?I?m soon going to be talking with that event?s organiser to discuss things and see whether it would be better to schedule my event before or after the Fight Night.
?But the WBA title is undoubtedly the biggest in boxing ? matched only perhaps by a medal at the Olympic Games. To be able to fight for that belt is a tremendous opportunity for Teresa, particularly because she has not been involved in the sport for all that long.
?If we can get it organised in Bermuda it would be a fantastic night, not just for her but for the Island as a whole and I?ll be working hard over the next few days to try and make it a reality.?
Meanwhile, Perozzi said yesterday she would not be getting overly excited until there was a contract in front of her ? though she began sparring for the first time at the Police Gym last night in case things begin to fall into place.
Perozzi stopped Carrington in the sixth round of what was a Women?s International Boxing Association (WIBA) world title bout back in September, 2005 in Trinidad.
But a major row between Potts, who promoted that fight, and the WIBA led to Perozzi being stripped of the title and being handed the vacant NABC crown instead.
The professional masseuse has held on to the belt through two subsequent defences against Americans Martha Deitchman and Roselin Morales and boasts a fight record of five and two ? the two defeats coming before her NABC title against Monica Nunez from the Dominican Republic and American Laura Ramsey.
