Pierce has hand in Washington victory
The Washington Redskins may not have made the play-offs but Antonio Pierce ensured they went out with a bang.
The 23-year-old linebacker, the son of Cleo Burrows of Southampton, had an integral role in Washington's 20-17 victory over Arizona on Sunday.
The Cardinals were leading 17-12 In the fourth quarter at FedExField when Pierce and the Redskins' defence took to the pitch.
Facing third and six from their own 24-yard line Arizona attempted a screen pass.
When quarterback Jake Plummer's throw was bobbled by Michael Pittman, Pierce grabbed the ball out of the air for an interception, the first of his professional career, at Arizona's 23-yard line.
The turnover opened the door for Washington to retake the lead.
Eight plays later running back Stephen Davis ploughed into the end zone from three yards out to give the Redskins the decisive score. They converted the two-point attempt to take the lead and finish the game 20-17 victors.
The win gave Washington an 8-8 end of season record - not bad considering they lost their first five games.
"The one thing they have exhibited throughout this season is a tremendous amount of heart and a tremendous amount of purpose," said Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer. "All of us that were in that locker room, players and coaches alike, have a sense that although it was not a championship team it was truly a team. It's nice to be part of that.
"There is no group I've been associated with that had more heart than this group."
