Piper hits the high notes

Two late strikes from Rodre (Piper) Wilson helped Trojans to a remarkable comeback and booked them a tie with Dandy Town in the Martonmere Cup final.

The enigmatic forward forced the wet and wild semi-final into extra time with an 86th minute strike to cancel out Nakia Smith?s early goal before putting Dennis Brown?s men ahead after 107 minutes of frustrating football at BAA Field last night.

Rohaan Simons then added insult to injury three minutes later, capitalising on a Zane Hendrikson error to hand Dwayne (Streaker) Adams his fist defeat as a coach.

But it all could have been so different had Village made the most of their chances in regulation time.

With five minutes left, determined work by Reggie Lowe won possession back for Village deep in Trojan territory.

The ball was played square and substitute forward Mackie Crane had all day to seal the victory.

The burly striker took a touch, looked up and then proceeded to scuff the ball wide of the post. It was a terrible miss at a vital time and the general consensus from those that had braved the rains was that it was a miss that would come back to haunt his side.

And in the 86th minute that proved to be the case as Wilson saved the day for his new club.

He chased a through ball, rounded the ?keeper, managed to keep his feet despite the weather and Hendrikson?s lunge before smashing the ball home past the growing group of defenders on the line to send the game into extra innings.

Village heads dropped and the momentum swung Somerset?s way and when Hendrikson had pushed away two Trojan attempts, it was almost inevitable that Wilson would be on hand to drive home with his left foot from three yards out.

A scuffed clearance from the Village ?keeper then handed the ball to Stephen Astwood, and even though his first attempt was blocked, Simons was on hand to slot home to settle the affair and book Trojans a November 11 final spot at the expense of the perennial cup specialists.

Even in the opening minutes, it became clear the steady rain ? and the increasingly slick surface ? were going to play a major part in the outcome of the game.

There were mistakes, poor first touches, players losing their footing and plenty of sliding over.

And ten minutes in, Village were ahead.

The Trojans defence were taking their sweet time getting the ball away from danger and when it was rolled out to Marco Butterfield, Lowe was alive to the opportunity.

The diminutive winger slipped in front of the midfielder, picked up the ball and swung a pin-point cross to the far post where a grateful Smith was on hand to nod home past a flapping Timmy Figureido.

Even with Kevin Jennings out through injury, Village looked strong at the back although brother Keith?s absence through suspension ? having been booked in three of his four games this year ? had a more detrimental effect on the game.

With their mercurial midfield genius missing ? and Trojans opting for a physical approach to midfield play ? the game was all but devoid of chances.

The damp and rather unimaginative battle in the middle of the park left the Smith goal as the only effort on target in the opening 35 minutes of the nervous semi-final.

Lowe, his assistance for the goal aside, was constantly making needless mistakes on the right wing but so were most of the Trojans, leaving coach Brown getting visibly more furious as half time, and his chance to explode, grew closer.

Whatever he said obviously worked as Trojans came out more confidently after the break.

Even when the torrential rains returned, the number of mistakes decreased with subs Wilson and Simons making some positive inroads.

But with the crowds fleeing to the bar, the number of chances increased although the speculative shots and strong defence made a goal look unlikely ? until Wilson?s first timely and decisive intervention.: Z.
