Play-off dreams still alive for Kyle

Debut: Kyle Lightbourne made his debut for Hull City on Saturday.

Kyle Lightbourne helped new club Hull City earn a battling point at Leyton Orient on Saturday to keep their Third Division play-offs dreams alive.

Lightbourne, who has joined the Tigers for the remainder of the season after being put on the transfer list by Macclesfield Town, played the majority of the goalless draw at Brisbane Road.

The Bermudian made his debut alongside Gary Alexander up front so as a result fellow new boy Adrian Caceres had to be content with a place on the bench.

The nearest he came to scoring was in the first half when his header forced a hurried clearance from an Orient defender right in front of his 'keeper.

The efforts of Lightbourne and his teammates were fully appreciated by boss Billy Russell afterwards.

"We were up against it in the first half and were a little bit off the pace. The game was very open - too open from our point of view - and I thought that we got a lot tighter in the second 45 minutes," he said.

"In the end we might have sneaked it as we had a couple of good opportunities near the end and Adrian Caceres was disappointed that he didn't score.

"I said to the lads before the game that their season started today and although you're never happy with a point in these circumstances it's a point from which we can build," he added.

"We're still going for the play-offs and can only take a game at a time. Darlington are next up for us and that's what we're focusing on now."

Meanwhile, Shaun Goater's return to Rotherham United with Manchester City ended with a point apiece.

City went a goal down in the first half but Ali Bernabia spared the table-topper's blushes against the lowly Millers.

Goater played the whole game but was unable to add to his 30-goal tally.

"It was not a classic," said manager Kevin Keegan. "It is a difficult place to come and get a result and all things considered it is a point gained."
