Plumstead and Kyme show class on court

Bermudians Gary Plumstead and Denise Kyme showed their class last weekend as they took top honours among an international field of competitors in the first annual Bermuda Truckfinders Charity Tournament.

About 100 squash players from the United States, Cayman Islands and Bermuda participated in the tournament held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association and, when the dust had settled, it was the locals who had the most to celebrate.

In the Men's Division One, results went according to seedings as the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. Top seed Plumstead dismissed No. 4 seed Nick Wiffen 9-1, 9-1, 9-2. The second semifinal could not have been more different with No. 3 seed Tommy Sherratt pushing No. 2 seed Dominic Hughes all the way in a five-set thriller before Hughes moved into the finals with a 9-7, 6-9, 9-8, 5-9, 9-3 win.

That set up the final between current BSRA Squash Pro Plumstead and the former BSRA Squash Pro Hughes, now based in Philadelphia. The first game of the final saw Hughes get the better of Plumstead narrowly winning the game which see-sawed back and forth but the South African southpaw turned up the heat in the next three games to romp to an expected victory,7-9, 9-2, 9-1, 9-0.

In the Ladies' Division One, Caymanian Cathryn Hindess, who played in the recent Rosebowl, was tipped to beat No. 2 Kyme - but the underdog had other intentions.

The match was very tight with Hindess claiming the first game and Kyme levelling in the second game. The Bermudian then produced some amazing squash to clinch the third game without conceding a serve for a 2-1 lead. Hindess fought back valiantly in game four, saving six match points before Kyme overpowered to a 3-9, 9-5, 9-0, 10-9 win.

It was an all-international final in Men's Division Two with Richard Von Hirschberg and Wendy Ansdell both from Concord Acton, Massachusetts. Ansdell started strongly winning the first game with only conceding the serve on two occasions. Von Hirschberg regrouped and the match swung back and forth before Ansdell was forced to retire in the fifth game with an injury. The score was then 0-9, 9-5, 6-9, 9-5, 2-1.

Laura Robinson, 13, clinched another victory for Bermuda by defeating Athene Von Hirschberg to take the Ladies' Division Two title 9-6, 9-3, 9-0. Men's Division Three was also contested between two members of the Concord club as Chris Knicker proved too strong for Barton Fiske winning 9-10, 10-9, 9-5, 9-4. Newcomer Rebecca Woodley was victorious over Anne Culligan to take the Ladies' Division Three championship with a straight-sets 9-4, 10-9, 9-7 win.

No. 2 seed David Elliott upset the seedings by defeating favourite Yuke-Wui Chung in the Men's Division Four final. Elliott's deft touch outmanoeuvred the speedy Chung to give the former a 9-2, 9-1, 9-2 triumph.

In the Under-17 final, top player Andrew Robinson was stretched to the limit by Michael Shrubb. Robinson took the title 9-7, 9-3, 2-9, 9-10, 9-4.

Robert Maycock continued his dominance at Under-13 level, beating No. 2 seed Mark James 9-1, 9-1, 9-0.
