Pocket Change proves he has plenty to spare
Nick DeCosta continued to rewrite the history books at Vesey Street last Friday night when he guided new two-year-old pony Pocket Change to two more wins in the 1.12.3- 1.15.4 time bar.
After shattering Custom Eyes'd previous four-year-old record of 13 straight wins on November 8, like the famous Energizer bunny, Pocket Change's remarkable unbeaten win streak just keeps on going and going and going.
Incredibly, it has now been 16 races in which DeCosta's newest edition to Inwood Stables has remained unbeaten and with every passing weekend continues to capture the imagination of both race fans and rival competitors alike.
DeCosta gives a lot of the credit to father Michael who was instrumental in acclimatising the two-year-old pony to life in the fast lane.
"He started him off and worked with the pony all summer and at first things started off a little rocky but everything is beginning to smoothen out and it's showing," said DeCosta yesterday.
DeCosta says that he does not feel any added pressure on him when he is driving in the sulky now that he is the proud bearer of the new record.
"I don't feel any additional pressure because I'm quite pleased with the way things are going at the moment," he said.
"I think that at this point if he lost a race it was coming but, no, I don't feel any pressure."
DeCosta attributes some of his pony's success to the "luck of the draw".
He also admits the competition has been tougher in the faster time bar.
"It's been kind of how the draw goes as the competition is quite tough," DeCosta explained.
"If the draw goes to my disadvantage then it will either show me that he's a better pony than I thought or that he's reached his match.
"I have been quite fortunate with the draws in that I've been given some good starting positions. On the other hand he's had some tough races - there was one were we started at number four and came up through the field to win the race.
"So he hasn't had it easy all the way."
Commenting on the new record, DeCosta said: "That's a huge accomplishment because it's very rare to win consecutive races like that and especially on a young horse like Pocket Change.
"It's really rare to win a bunch of consecutive races and I think that this record will stand for a long time. But records are made to be broken as well and it would be good if someone else comes along and breaks it."
Meanwhile, young Jason Lopes at the helm of Nateway drove to victory in the 1.09.2-1.16.1 A Division time bar in 1.08.3. LA Winning Ticket with Bill Booth in the sulky clinched the night's second heat in a winning time of 1.08.2 with Killer's Legacy driven by Joe Viera finishing a close second in 1.08.3.
Fernand Rego's Little Bear captured the B Division in 1.08.3 with Eddie Roque's Ceramic Shamrock second in 1.08.4.
DeCosta also drove Trott Acre Byrd to victory lane in the first heat of the C Division in 1.09 while Real Shamrock, driven by Aaron Simms finished a close second in 1.09.1.
Capping off a fine double for the DeCosta family was Nick's father, Michael, who captured the second heat in the sulky of Kickapoo Brave in 1.08.4 while Grand Magic driven by Anthony Rego placed second in 1.09.1.
Rego also guided Maja Nightrain to victory in the A Division in a time of 1.10.4 to edge out David Lopes at the helm of LA Erma Time.
Samantha Hayward (Eddie the Great) clinched the first race in the Free for All in 1.07.4 while Tuxedo's Bowtie recorded the evening's fastest time to seize the second Free for All in 1.05.3.
Harness racing resumes this Friday at Vesey Street. Post time is at 7 p.m.
