Police aid and abet the Upstarts

Police Polecats cracked open the men?s league title race last weekend with a 7-0 win over Chameleons.

It was the second defeat in two weeks for league-leading Chameleons, who fell 4-3 to Upstarts on March 19.

Polecats pounced on the injury-depleted Chameleons early in their Sunday match.

Carl Seale soundly started the scoring with two back-to-back goals ten minutes in ? both in open play.

Nigel Deane widened the goal gap before half time by nailing a penalty stroke.

Polecats came back from the break confident and soon rolled in another four goals. Kian Woolkey hit the mark on a short corner routine and Deane then earned his second goal seven minutes later.

Adam Griffith and Shannon Lawrence each contributed an open play goal to cap the shut-out.

Chameleons seemed unable to make anything happen on the weekend ? earning only three short corners compared to Polecats? ten.

While the Reds still sit at the top of the table with 40 points, a winning streak from number two Upstarts with 33, could rob them of the title.

Chameleons have just two matches left in the season compared to Upstarts five. Assuming neither team loses in the dying weeks of play, Upstarts would emerge with the title by a two-point margin.

The possibilities of an Upstarts title may well be decided by their match this weekend against Polecats ? making the Saturday afternoon game a hot ticket to see if Polecats will play the role of season spoiler.

In other men?s play, Rebels secured a 4-1 win over Panthers. Steve Sproule grabbed the two opening goals in the match, which were followed by on-target shots from Neil Honess and Neville Westin. Captain Stephen Troake secured a dignity-saving goal for Panthers on a short corner routine in the 66th minute.

The women?s A league is also likely to be decided this weekend as neck-and-neck Swallows (46 points) and Ravens (45 points) face off.

Both teams earned wins last weekend, with Swallows knocking back Bluebirds 5-0 and Ravens earning a 6-0 result over Cardinals.

Cath Griffiths earned a hat-trick on the way to the Swallows? victory and Jenny Burrell and Joann Wilson each added one. With 22 goals to date, Wilson is the A league?s top goal scorer.

Ravens goalkeeper Leslie Kimberley notched another shut-out in the Ravens-Cardinals match as her team-mates attacked opposing ?keeper Holly Augustus.

Ravens Jennifer Simmons, Ana Abend and Kerry Graham each added one goal to Caroline Black?s hat-trick to seal the result.

In other A play, Canaries rolled over Swifts to a 8-0 result.

Mary-Ellen Jackson opened the scoring, followed by successful efforts from Sam DePutron, Laurel Powell, and Shuena Griffiths. Jackson would hit the mark three more times before the end of the match while Griffiths also found her second.

Swifts turned the tables on this pairing in the B league, however, storming to a 9-0 win.

Gabrielle Bertrand opened the scoring but then the match was all about Francesca Cacace and Keishae Robinson ? who grabbed an impressive four goals each.

Swifts may have sewn up the B title with their win as chief threat Swallows stalled last weekend with two draws ? against Bluebirds and Wildcats.

Swallows had a 2-2 result against Wildcats, with goals from Annaka Rubidge and Karen Turner for Swallows matched by successful efforts from Wildcats Carmen Abediyi and Zina Jones.

A 3-3 result on Sunday against Bluebirds did nothing to improve Swallows title chances. Ellie Reoch, Maria Harris and Eva Dillas all scored for Bluebirds while Karen Campbell earned one goal for Swallows and Marguerite O?Connell two.

With their 17-2-2 record, Swifts have a solid 53-point hold on the title, while Swallows trail with 50.

In other B results, Cardinals earned a 1-0 result over Ravens with Denise Downey scoring the lone goal.
