Ponies get ready for New Year's Day action

A total of 43 ponies will be going for glory when harness racing continues tomorrow at Vesey Street.

The event features the Bermuda Bred Stakes and the women's Powder Puff series, which will showcase rookie female drivers.

Other highlights of the day will feature Michael DeCosta's Shady's Liberty in the 14-18 (A) Division Junior Free for All, while in the 12-16 heats all eyes will be focussed on Samantha Hayward's Abby Dabby Doo, which has racked up six wins on the trot.

Also on form is Colin Mello's Miss LL Dane, who will looking to extend his unbeaten streak to five in the 13-17 (C) division.

While in the 22-26 heats, their will be no holds barred as Nick DeCosta's GV Colonel Spence, Eddie Roque's Tuxedo's Bowtie, and Bobby DeGraff's Rocket Ride go in search of the record.

Rookie sensation, Jason Lopes, enjoying a remarkable season in the 5-10 (A) division, will again be looking to rise to the big occasion.

"The public can expect some exciting harness racing on New Year's day. The competition has been fierce recently," said David Lopes, president of the Driving Horse and Pony Club.

"Our season is almost two thirds of the way completed and the ponies have been doing extremely well.

"Everyone is fit and peaking at the right moment, so we are anticipating some fast times and possibly the establishing of a new track record."

Racing begins 11.30 a.m at Vesey Street and admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, while all accompanied children under 12 years of age will be admitted free.
