Premier clubs? cash incentive
AT&T Wireless yesterday reiterated their pledge to Bermuda Football Association (BFA).
After signing a $100,000 three-year sponsorship deal with the sport?s national governing body last May, the telecommunications giant yesterday unveiled a new trophy which will be awarded to the 2004-05 Premier Division champions.
At the same time the company announced prizes which will be presented to the Premier Division player and fan of the week.
This season will again see Premier Division clubs vying for cash ranging from $8,000 for the champions to $1,000 for the last-placed team. The runners-up will receive $7,000, third place $6,000, fourth place $5,000, fifth place $4,000, sixth place $3,000 and seventh place $2,000. Additionally, the top First Division club will receive $2,000 and the runners-up $1,000.
Devonshire Cougars? midfield schemer Domico Coddington was yesterday named as the season?s first Premier Division player of the week following a stellar performance during his team?s 3-0 win over North Village at Bernard Park last Sunday.
Recipients of the Player of the Week Award will receive a cellular phone in addition to a free month of local service, which will also be awarded to the chosen fan of the week.
In total, AT&T Wireless are set to pump $39,000 into local football over the next six months.
Last June the telecommunications providers also signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Bermuda Cricket Board.
?We are happy to be associated with local football and are proud to be supporting our community,? stated Jonathan Koshar, general manager of AT&T Wireless during yesterday?s press conference held on the steps of City Hall.
Also present at City Hall were Sports Minister Dale Butler, BFA first-vice president Chris Furbert, general secretary David Sabir, executive member Roxianna Richardson and Coddington.
?AT&T Wireless anticipates an exciting and competitive season,? Koshar added. ?In addition to prize monies, AT&T Wireless will recognise player contribution to the quality of the game and encourage all players to maintain a high level of competitive professionalism throughout the season.?
