Premier pair in fight to avoid the drop
Wolves and PHC will be battling for their Premier Division lives tomorrow - on the final day of the 2001-2002 league campaign.
Both are staring relegation in the face and are aware that anything less than maximum points could condemn them to a season in the First Division.
Wolves take on an unpredictable Devonshire Cougars outfit while the Zebras meet the other Devonshire team, Colts.
And in both cases, it will be a fight for survival against teams who although having secured a place in next season's Martonmere Cup will still want to finish the season on a high.
Back in January relegation might have been the furthest thing from the minds of Wolves and PHC supporters as their sides battled for Dudley Eve Trophy supremacy. Indeed, Wolves went on to win the holiday tournament.
But since then it's been all downhill amidst a title and relegation campaign that has proved one of the tightest in recent memory.
With North Village having wrapped up the championship last Sunday, the focus tomorrow turns to relegation and on which team will accompany already-doomed St. George's into the First Division.
Martonmere Cup places are virtually irrelevant as the division only consists of eight teams. Thus all those other than the two who are relegated will qualify for next season's competition.
Residents in the top flight since the 1997-98 season, Wolves have endured a season of "extremes".
After winning just their second major title, the Dudley Eve, at the beginning of the new year, it appeared as though they were headed for more honours with the club at that time in contention for both League and FA Cup honours.
However, their fortunes would take a drastic turn for the worse after defeat by Dandy Town 2-1 when the league campaign resumed on January 6. That loss sparked a five-match skid which also included a demoralising 3-2 FA Cup quarter-final defeat by First Division Somerset Eagles.
The disappearance of stalwarts Mark (Beaver) Ray, Khari Sharrief and Sakai Waldron didn't help their cause, although Ray reportedly had to return to the US for a routine medical check following a road accident in which he suffered head injuries.
Now Wolves step into the Den tomorrow knowing that anything short of a win will seal their fate.
Albert Smith's Cougars will still have unpleasant memories of the double blow Dennis Brown's side inflicted upon them in the FA Cup and Dudley Eve back in December and will be showing their rivals few favours.
Meanwhile, at White Hill Field things could be tricky for PHC when they take to the pitch against Devonshire Colts.
Should Wolves win, then PHC must also come away with a victory in order to survive.
In only their third season back in the top flight, PHC were unfortunate against Dandy Town in midweek when the Hornets battled back to earn a 3-3 draw having trailed at one point 3-1. A share of the spoils was sufficient to carry Town to safety.
Such is the present level of anxiety in the Zebras' camp that veteran forward Kenny Mills ended his long exile when he returned in midweek, although there was no sign of unpredictable striker Raynel Lightbourne.
Somerset Trojans need only a point to assure their place in the top flight, and they should get it when they host St. George's.
Newly-crowned league champions North Village make the short trek to St. John's Field where they take on Dandy Town in a match of little consequence.
However, with the possibility that both could meet again in the FA Cup and Friendship Trophy finals this month, they'll be eager to check each other out.
In First Division action, leaders Boulevard will be looking to inch closer to the league crown, but first they will have to see off the challenge of second-placed Somerset Eagles at BAA Field in what promises to be a prelude to this month's Shield final.
Back in December during the teams' only encounter this season, Eagles' Lamaul Crofton scored with a sweet, left-footed volley three minutes from time to give his team a share of the points.
Third-placed Hamilton Parish take on Young Men's Social Club at Bernard Park aware that they are still within striking distance of promotion and remain a threat to both the Blazers and Eagles.
St. David's, outside contenders for promotion, have the weekend off while Prospect take on Southampton Rangers at Police Field and Paget and Ireland Rangers meet at White Hill Field.
