President in knee-d of surgery
Sport is one of the great levellers and high-flying Attorney General and Bermuda Football Association president Larry Mussenden was certainly brought to earth with a bump this weekend.
Making a rare and highly-anticipated appearance on the football field last Sunday in the annual grudge match between lawyers and accountants at BAA Field, the game was a mere 30 seconds old when striker Mussenden came a cropper in the opposition?s six-yard box, totally fluffing his attempted shot on goal and twisting his knee badly as his foot connected with the ground and not the ball.
An X-ray at the hospital about an hour later revealed a fractured tibia and he soon had to go under the knife to have the damage repaired ? with an orthopaedic surgeon inserting two pins in the knee.
Speaking from home yesterday where he will remain for the rest of the week with his swollen knee bandaged up, Mussenden made light of his misfortune while describing exactly what happened.
He also revealed that he is going to need crutches for between five and six weeks.
?As you know I?m one of the best strikers in Bermuda and as usual I was lurking around in the penalty area waiting for my chance to pounce,? he said.
?A perfect cross came into the six-yard box and just as I was about to unleash a rocket of a strike into the top corner, the ball took a bit of an awkward bounce on the BAA pitch and when I went to execute the shot, the ball was no longer there. My body weight was going one way and my knee the other and when my foot connected with the ground, the ground didn?t move!
?This was a whole new experience for me though because I had never been in an ambulance before or had an operation before but the whole service was pretty good. When I was asleep during the operation I even dreamt that I?d scored the goal and many others for Bermuda at the World Cup!
?I managed to get some work done at the hospital and even after coming off the morphine I?m not in any great pain. I?d like to thank everyone who helped me out on Sunday ? they were first class. I can still do a bit of work from home but I?m hoping to be back in the office by Monday.?
