Prospect's Furbert all smiles as probe goes on
Prospect coach David Furbert said he was all smiles yesterday as the Bermuda Football Association continued its probe into alleged irregularities involving his side's FA Cup opponents Devonshire Cougars.
Cougars beat Prospect 5-2 in the semifinal of the prestigious competition at the weekend to book a place in the showpiece final.
However, their involvement is now up in the air following allegations that they fielded an illegible player.
Midfielder Khari Goddard is believed to be the player at the centre of the probe. Apparently Devonshire Recreation Club were notified of his ineligibility for the game, but failed to pass on the information to club coach Albert Smith prior to Sunday's match.
The BFA held a meeting on Tuesday night to discuss the matter, but yesterday refused to say what the outcome might be.
Should Cougars be found guilty of fielding a player under suspension the BFA could award the match to Prospect which would see them become the first First Division side in 15 years to reach an FA Cup final.
The BFA could, however, also order that the match be replayed.
Coach Furbert did not say whether he had been notified one way or the other by the BFA when contacted yesterday.
However, he did say: "Let me put it to you this way - I'm smiling. And the FA Cup final is on my birthday.
"I don't want to say anything officially, but at the moment I am smiling."
Cougars' coach Smith said he was in the dark about any conclusion.
"We haven't heard any final outcome yet, so we don't really know anything at the moment," he said.
When pressed yesterday BFA General Secretary David Sabir refused to elaborate on what had been discussed by his organisation.
"The Association is currently concluding with some procedural matters and at the conclusion of this process . . . the clubs involved will have to be communicated with before we are in a position of sharing any information that's deemed necessary with the media."
It is anticipated the BFA will announce their final ruling today.
Should Cougars be forced to forfeit the match, it will mark the third time in FA Cup history that a club has been disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.
That dubious distinction is currently shared by Southampton Rangers and PHC Zebras, who forfeited FA Cup ties in the 80s.
