Quartet in challenge for end of season silverware
Two more trophies are about to take up new homes this weekend as the 2002/03 soccer season draws ever near to conclusion.
During tomorrow's opening contest at the National Sports Centre, Southampton Rangers will go in search of a second piece of silverware when they take on fellow promotion bound Hamilton Parish in the First Division Shield Final.
It was only four days ago that Rangers pipped Parish for the First Division title by goal difference.
And now the Premier Division bound club can apply the finishing touches to a successful season by adding the Shield to their display cabinet.
Rangers last seized the First Division double in 1994/95, however, their task will not be easy coming up against a Parish side that will be looking to salvage some pride after letting the league championship slip away in a match that could go either way.
Sparks should also fly in the Friendship Trophy final contest between Premier Division sides Dandy Town and Somerset Eagles - two teams looking to add a bit of sparkle to an otherwise below-par season.
Eagles will be seeking a first ever major domestic title, while Town will attempt to put an end to a three year cup drought and clinch a fourth Friendship title overall.
However, obscuring Town's path to another cup title is a very unpredictable Eagles side that has proven on a few occasions this past season that they can rise to meet the challenge.
And Eagles coach Marc Bean is full of confidence.
"We beat them in the first game of the season 4-2 and then they defeated us 4-0 at St.John's," he recalled.
"Which really is a testament to how balanced both teams are head to head. Basically it was just a matter on the day that the better team won each time.
"I know that we will be ready and obviously they will also be ready because it's a cup final. The morale is very high and everyone seems to be focused.
"And as far as I am concerned we are as prepared as we can be and it's now just a matter of the team being focused on the day and completing the task at hand. And if it's in our hearts and we have the desire, then I feel confident that the team can accomplish it."
Meanwhile, today will see the finals of the various AS&K junior leagues at the National Sports Centre.
In the Under-11 final, beginning at 10 a.m., Dandy Town and PHC will go head to head while North Village Reds take on Devonshire Colts in the Under-13 final at 11.45 a.m.
North Village and Boulevard will then round off the day's event when they clash in the Under-15 final at 1.30 p.m.
