Quested lifts Open title
There seems to be no stopping Blair Quested these days as the New Zealander capped off a remarkable 2001/02 table tennis season by successfully defending his Bermuda Open title.
After easily disposing of Mike Stirling in his opening match, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, during Tuesday night's championships held at Berkeley Institute gym, the 32 year-old Kiwi continued to gather momentum before powering past Duncan Coates 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 in the semi-finals.
Next stop for Quested was a showdown in the final with Alden Ray, who proved to be a more formidable opponent.
After Quested won the first two games 11-8 and 11-5, Ray began to let off a little steam of his own to take the third game 15-13.
But this would prove to be the last stop for Ray as his opponent ran out a convincing 11-8, 11-8 winner.
"I am really pleased about it," said the now two-time Open champion. " I played well in the final against Ray who was putting a lot of pressure on my game and it was good for me to dig deep and finally break through.
"It's getting more and more tough every time I play against guys like Alden or Myron Piper. They're working me out a bit more, and I realise that they are trying to figure me out and that next season things are going to be even tougher."
Quested also emerged victorious in doubles action after pairing up with team-mate Chris Fleming to beat the pair of Ray and Stirling 11-3, 11-13, 13-11, 11-5 in the final.
Quested is also the current Bermuda Closed champion and has only tasted defeat once this season, against Piper in league play.
