Quinn weathers the storm to make it through

One of three Bermudians has advanced to the second stage of the main draw competition in the ITF 14 & Under Caribbean Development Championships.

Jasmine Quinn weathered the storm of the round-robin segment in St. Vincent while her team-mates Johnny Holland and Cayla Cross - who were in groups of four - stumbled and are now vying for consolation honours.

Quinn, who was competing in a group of three, defeated hometown competitor Roxanne Russell 6-0, 6-3, on Tuesday before losing 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 (last set played as tie-breaker) to Trinidadian Carlista Mohammed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Holland lost 6-2, 6-2 to Barbadian Bradley Bryan; 7-5, 0-6, 7-4 (tie-breaker) to Antigua's Kai Piggott and 6-0, 6-3 to Vincentian Kirk DeSilva. Cross succumbed 6-1, 6-2 to Janique Jessurun of Suriname and 3-6, 6-1, 8-6 (tie-breaker) to Grenada's Lois Alexis before winning her last round-robin fixture 6-0, 6-0 versus Jasmine Joseph of Dominica.

"Bermuda is not being outplayed but we have to tighten up on big points. Our strokes are on par with players from the other countries but we are weak mentally. We need more mental toughness," said coach Howard Cross.

He added that there was a notable difference between Quinn's level of play and that of her compatriots.

"Jasmine has more mental toughness. You can see she has had more exposure. You can tell," he said.

By contrast, it's 11-year-old Cross' first time overseas and she is getting experience which "will toughen her up", he noted.

As for Holland, the coach said "he has got to learn to stop defeating himself".

"He comes down on himself too hard and it's affecting his whole game. He has to learn to control his emotions on court."
