Race track plans set to be finalised
Bermuda's motorsports leaders should soon be presented with the final plans for the new purpose-built track at Clearwater Beach.
Director of Youth and Sports Anthony Roberts said yesterday that plans had been presented to the motorsports governing bodies twice already for their input and they would shortly be consulted again for the final seal of approval on the long-awaited facility.
In the recent Budget, Government allocated $301,000 to build the track, much to the appreciation of heads of motorsports organisations. President of the Bermuda Power Boat Association (BPBA) and spokesman for the Bermuda United Motorsports Federation (BUMF), Chris Roque, was thrilled to learn of the significant step in plans.
"That's wonderful. We knew it was tabled but we never knew if it would get through. We're grateful for the investment and the interest in our sport," he said, optimistic that regular consultations on the matter would restart soon.
"We have not met with Government recently so I hope this confirmation of funds for the track will put things back on course."
Noting that the Clearwater Beach project was still in the "design phase", Roque said it will take a major effort for the track to be finished by September, as Sports Minister Randy Horton indicated it should be.
"That's going to be a good one. They would have to start working on it right now. It's a lot to be done but if they work diligently it could be ready by September."
President of the Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC), Ashley Simmons, too, is pleased.
"We're delighted at the fact that our Government has approved the money. For this to come up - and possibly by September this year - is just great; excellent.
"We need a place to race and with it being inclusive of all the motorsports, I think it's the best thing to happen to motorsports in Bermuda," said Simmons.
Delano Telford echoed similar sentiments, saying it augurs well for the Bermuda Karting Club's future.
"We're ecstatic that this purpose-built facility, which will be used by all the motorsports organisations, is closer to being a reality. It's an exciting prospect.
"I believe all those individuals who have been hesitant about investing their money in new equipment will come forward now," said the president. "I can see us growing from strength to strength. Hopefully, it will have a massive impact on motorsports in general."
